Write a commentPolice have launched an appeal for information following a report of a burglary at the Raymond Kelly Park area of Newry yesterday, Wednesday 5th June.
Detective Constable Brannigan said: “At around 2pm, it was reported that a male approached a house in the area claiming work was required to be completed at the property. An older woman was inside the property and gave a sum of money to the male, who stated he would return to carry out the work. This work was not completed, as the male did not return."
The man is described as being aged between 40-50 years old, 5”10 in height and of medium build. He was wearing a red coat with short, black hair, cleanly shaven and spoke with a local accent
Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at that time to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 1175 5/6/19. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
Detective Brannigan added “I would ask members of the public to bear in mind the following advice when dealing with unexpected visitors. We want to keep everyone safe in our community and I would appeal to householders to be aware of cold callers coming to your door and to always request identification and not to be afraid to do this as legitimate callers will not be offended and should have identification on display or available.
“By reporting any suspicious activity, this can help deter criminals and reduce crime in your areas. If you are not too sure about a vehicle or an individual in the area, please contact police on 101 who can advise whether this is a genuine caller or something more sinister.”
Chairperson Of Newry Mourne & Down Council Charlie Casey also expressed his concern urging vigilance saying
“There have unfortunately been a recent spate of robberies in the Dominic Street and Raymond Kelly Park vicinities."
Cllr Casey continued “Incidents like this heighten fear and concern within communities, particularly for our older most vulnerable residents. Those engaged in these selfish criminal acts care about nothing only themselves. I would urge everyone to be extra vigilant, to watch out for any suspicious behaviour. These criminals must be apprehended and face the full rigours of the law”.
Concluding the Council Chairperson said “I would ask that anyone who might have information in relation to these specific incidents to contact the Police.
"Also please ensure never to let anyone into your house without first seeing proper ID. If in doubt call the PSNI Quick Check Scheme on 101"
