Work is not expected to start again until late summer on the remaining section of the Carlingford Lough Greenway between Victoria Lock and the border. It follows several months of inactivity at the site. Shared Island funding of €1.5m was awarded by the Irish Government for completion of the boardwalk between Victoria Lock and the border.

Planning permission was granted for the facility in November 2023. It's not known for certain the reason for the delay but a clue could be in one of the planning conditions "Construction works (including piling works) shall be completed outside of the breeding bird season, 1st March to 31st August, to avoid disturbance to breeding birds."

In a reply to a query from Newry.ie a Newry, Mourne and Down District Council spokesperson said "Works are expected onsite late summer 2024 through to completion in late 2024/early 2025."

Currently short land bound sections are complete at Victoria Lock, the border and on Rough Island. The remaining sections includes a total of 1km of 4m wide timber boardwalk. The section of greenway from Omeath to the Border is now fully open but there is no access to it from the border end.

When finished the long awaited project will make it a lot safer for cyclists and walkers to travel between Newry and Carlingford. Consultations are currently underway regarding plans to extend it to Dundalk.

In reply to our media query a Council representative said "The Carlingford Lough Greenway site works to the Northern Side of the Border are being completed in 2 stages. The first phase of works at Victoria Lock, Rough Island and at the Border were completed by early 2024.  The second stage known as the Boardwalk Sections (From Rough Island to the Border and Rough Island to Victoria Lock) are being delivered through a separate Design & Build Contract. Works are expected onsite late summer 2024 through to completion in late 2024/early 2025."
