They’re known as ‘the founding fathers of Celtic rock’. We know them as Horslips. And they’re coming to Newry on Saturday 26 August to tell their story as part of Iúr Cinn Fleadh in the City later this month.
Bassist and frontman Barry Devlin and keyboards, pipes, whistles and flute player Jim Lockhart will be in conversation with Fleadh committee member Jim McGrath and the Oriel Traditional Orchestra will also be there. It promises to be an amazing event.
Trad Roots
We can’t wait to hear how Horslips became musical legends, and shared Irish music with the rest of the world through their blend of prog and trad.
Horslips won us over with such LPs as Happy To Meet, Sorry To Part – with its unusual concertina design – and concept albums like The Book Of Invasions: A Celtic Symphony and The Táin.
When Barry and Jim aren’t spilling the beans about the band, as part of the evening programme, The Oriel Traditional Orchestra will play some of Horslips’ hits and other trad tunes.
The Oriel Traditional Orchestra is a cross-border, intergenerational community orchestra whose members come primarily from Louth, Meath, Monaghan and Armagh.
They reflect not only Horslips’ trad roots, but also the band’s ability to play both sides of the border without prejudice. Horslips were accepted everywhere.
Special Memories
This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear the inside story of the band who created a genre – and to celebrate this remarkable cultural phenomenon. Everyone has special memories of how they rocked to Horslips.
