Craft makers locally are being invited to register their interest in this year's August Craft Month, the annual month-long celebration of craft.

Around 1,500 makers took part last year and those behind the event are keen to exceed that number this year. The celebration, now in its 5th year will feature makers from the length and breadth of Ireland, from established craftspeople who have passed skills down through generations, to newer makers who are bringing fresh energy to the sector.

This year, makers are being encouraged to work with other small businesses in their local area to build connections. Suggested approaches include holding a workshop in a local café, giving a demonstration in a craft shop, or hosting a talk in a local library.

Katherine McDonald, Director of Craft NI, said: "August Craft Month provides an exceptional platform to celebrate and showcase the talented makers we have across these shores.

"With more than 400 events taking place each year, we want to encourage as many makers as possible to take part. We are already delighted by the strong interest from councils, arts venues, guilds, galleries and individual makers who are all eager to be part of this year's celebrations.

"From hands-on experiences to inspiring exhibitions, we welcome a diverse range of craft events. Whether it's an interactive workshop, a meet-the-maker session, an engaging talk or a craft trail, August Craft Month offers countless opportunities to connect people with the creativity behind the work."

Suzy O'Keefe, Head of Digital and Communications at the Design and Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI), said: "We are delighted to be partnering again with Craft NI for the all-island August Craft Month and we want to invite makers to apply to be part of the celebration.

"Now in its fifth year, August Craft Month continues to go from strength to strength, with increasing numbers of craft makers across the island getting involved and introducing new audiences to the joy of craft."

The event is open to people of all ages. As well as attending events, visitors have the chance to meet makers in person, purchase handmade goods and hear the stories behind individual crafts.

The deadline for makers to register their interest is Sunday, 7 June. Full details and applications can be found at augustcraftmonth.org/applications.
