An event in The Bookshelf in Newry this evening is part of a ten day community cinema festival happening throughout the Newry, Mourne and Down council area, with a range of film screenings and events planned.
The Spotlight Community Cinema Festival runs from 21 to 31 May 2026, bringing a network of film clubs, arts venues and volunteer-led cinemas together for a celebration of film and community.

The Bookshelf bookshop presents Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, a bold and visually striking reimagining of Shakespeare’s timeless love story. A unique screening in an intimate literary setting, blending classic text with modern energy and style.

Venues throughout the district will present their own specially programmed screenings during the festival, taking in classic cinema, Irish film, documentaries, live events and local collaborations. Screenings are planned in Newry, Rostrevor, Rathfriland, Hilltown, Newcastle, Banbridge, Downpatrick and Portaferry, with each event reflecting the identity of the local community.
The festival marks the growth of a community cinema network developed through the BFI Film Audience Network, delivered by Film Hub Northern Ireland.
Rob Manley, Spotlight Facilitator, said: "This festival is a celebration of the incredible work happening across our community cinema network. These groups have created more than screenings; they've built spaces where people can come together, share experiences and discover films they might never otherwise see on the big screen. That's what makes community cinema so special."
He also paid tribute to the contribution of one particular group, saying: "Newcastle Community Cinema has been a real driving force behind the growth of community cinema in the area. Through its work, it has helped establish a model for how local, volunteer-led venues can become important cultural spaces within their communities."
