Newpoint Players have won the 70th Ulster Drama Festival with their production of In the Shadow of the Glen - Re-imagined, Seán Treanor's take on J.M. Synge's one act play first performed in 1903.
The Ulster Drama Festival finale took place last night 27 April, in the Theatre at the Mill in Newtownabbey. The Newpoint production won Best Decor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director categories on their way to winning the top spot.
Best Decor award came thanks to Mary Goss who designed the set while Frances Morgan took the Best Supporting Actress accolade for her role as Peggy Cavanagh, who had a critical central role throughout the performance managing to act and play the bodhran at the same time!
The festival's Best Director award was won by Newpoint's Seán Treanor who in 're-imagining' the classic J.M. Synge work managed to put his own unique stamp on the production. The production set of grey standing stones contrasts dramatically with stunningly detailed masks made by Allison Rodgers and costumes from Bernie McParland.
The Newpoint production now heads to the All Ireland Drama Festival Final in Athlone in May.
