A former electrical store in Newry goes acoustic this week – with a free concert by Irish folk band Slemish.
The old Murphy’s Electrical shop in Catherine Street is now Newry Baptist Centre – home of Newry Baptist Church – who are hosting the music event this Friday, 8 April at 7.30pm.
The space that used to be filled with the beeps of microwaves and the hum of fridges will instead resonate with the sound of guitars, mandolin, banjo, whistles and flutes.
Newry Baptist Church have been based at the centre since 2020. They hope to welcome plenty of visitors to this week’s concert, as they treat them to an evening of music, food and drink.
The band Slemish formed in 2005. An aunt of one of the band members asked her nephew if he could put together a group of musicians to play on St Patrick's night at a church social in Belfast.
It was meant to be a one-off. But it evolved into something else. Slemish ended up travelling to France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and Portugal.
Slemish said they aim to share culture and faith through their concerts. They have performed in Newry before, at the Town Hall and at the Metropolitan Church.
‘We're especially looking forward to this event in Newry Baptist Centre,’ said a spokesperson for the band. ‘We’re keen to get playing live music again after all the restrictions.’
