Now based in Edinburgh singer-songwriter Cathal Murphy is back with the new laidback, jazz-funk single Overworked, Underpaid. Set for release on Friday 30th September, the mellow track draws similarities to the work of Tom Misch and John Mayer, and showcases Cathal’s undeniable expertise in blending groovy rhythmic guitar with expressive lyrics to create soulfully sweet music.
With an R&B-laced sound, Cathal explores themes of burnout and anxiety throughout the track. After a turning point in the chorus, however, it becomes clear that Overworked, Underpaid is a tribute to the people we meet in life who uplift and inspire us to keep moving forward.
Camlough native Cathal travelled to Montreal to record the track in February of this year, where he worked closely with celebrated Canadian singer and guitarist Ariel Posen. The pair were eager to celebrate each instrument and sound on the record using crisp mixing and stacking vocals in the chorus to emphasise the message behind the lyrics.
Overworked, Underpaid is the second in a string of new material to come from Cathal this year; he released a track he wrote and recorded for Amazon Prime’s The Reavey Brothers as a single earlier this month. Entitled Ever Since We Were Young, his previous single is just a section of the short film’s soundtrack, which has been co-written and scored by Cathal. Cathal’s second EP, Montreal Sessions, from which Overworked, Underpaid is taken, is set for release this autumn.
Cathal Murphy said:“I originally wrote this at a time when my whole reality had shifted and it was hard to feel positive. It’s about having a fear that your life isn’t going to turn out the way you thought it would, but having someone close to you to keep you going.
“I’ve always admired Ariel Posen, he is an amazing musician, so working with him out in Montreal on this track and the rest of my EP was amazing. I wanted this song to capture a certain Jazz/R&B-esque feeling, and Ariel was able to call on musicians at the top of their game who really helped us get the vibe we were chasing. Otis McDonald, from the amazing Scary Pockets, and Roman Clarkefeature on the track on drums, and Kieran Placatka plays keys and synth.”
Music has always been a huge part of Cathal’s life. He toured Europe and recorded two albums with contemporary Irish folk group Cúig before pursuing a musical journey as a soloist. He has previously released two singles, one of which, entitled Blue in the Best Way,was named BBC Afternoon Show’s Single of the Week last year. He released his debut EP, I'm writing to you, it can be lonely and beautiful at the edges of print,in June 2021 which garnered significant recognition and received high praise within the music industry.
The self-composed single Overworked, Underpaid was recorded at ToneBender studios, Montreal, Canada with Ariel Posen.
It will be available to download and stream on all usual platforms on Friday 30th September.
