Write a commentNewry and Mourne Museum is organising three events for May 2017 as part of a project examining performing arts activities in the district during the twentieth century.
On Tuesday 9 May Dr Stephen Goss will give a talk entitled, ‘No Tolerance of Undeserving Rank and Splendour’: The Wit and Satire of Gilbert and Sullivan’. This talk will give an insight into the stories behind some of Gilbert and Sullivan’s music.
On Tuesday 16 May, Roma Tomelty will give a talk entitled ‘The McCooeys...and other members of my family’. With 52 years in the professional theatre, Roma Tomelty will give an informed and amusing account of her family. Her actor and playwright father, Joseph Tomelty wrote ‘The McCooeys’; a weekly radio serial about a working class family in Belfast, which was the most listened programme on BBC N.I. for seven years.
On Tuesday 23 May the Museum will welcome Valerie Wilson, Textiles Curator at National Museums Northern Ireland. Valerie is curator of ‘A Step in Time: The Story of Irish Dance’, an exhibition at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, which features costumes relating to Newry dancing teacher, Sheila Nolan.
