A Rathfriland woman who was the first European woman to travel the almost 2000km overland in Canada from Winnipeg to Kamloops is the subject of a new play touring locally this summer.
Little Hills, the story of Rathfriland woman Catherine Schubert O'Hare, is as local as drama can get, with both the subject and the writer from Rathfriland, Co Down. Catherine was born in 1835 and at 16 travelled to North America on a Government scheme.
This is the lighthearted but tender story of a Rathfriland woman who left home on a famine coffin ship in 1850 to work as a housekeeper in America, and her pioneering voyage across the Rockies during the goldrush.
Little Hills brings the audience on the grand adventure with Catherine and her family, with all its highs and lows, which made her a celebrated figure in Canadian culture and folklore to this day.
The show visits Rostrevor, Downpatrick, Hilltown, Poyntzpass and Portadown between July and September.
