Is it an insult or is it complimentary?
Is it made up or a genuine identity?
One thing’s for sure, since pussy was a cat,
A Nyuck is from Newry and that’s a fact.
Now where did it come from? There’s many theories,
It’s been asked many times, plenty of queries,
Is it a birthright or do you have to earn it?
Is it taught and then you must learn it?
Anyone from the Newry area or just city central?
Does everyone qualify or am I being mental?
Is it just the Armagh side or also in Down,
As far out as Carnbane? Or would that cause a frown?
Do you have to live within earshot of the cathedral bells?
What’s the criteria for where a Nyuck dwells?
Or is it a way of life and not birthplace luck?
Can you move into Newry and then become a Nyuck?
There’s a few snobs about our wee town(or city),
Are they Nyucks too or is that an audacity?
Do you have to eat regularly out of Friar Tucks?
Is that a stipulation to be called a Newry Nyuck?
I live out in the sticks near that big stone wall,
My wife keeps me going about my Drumbanagher drawl,
There’s no mistaking where she’s from and I’ve often said,
With an accent like hers, she’s a Nyuck born and bred.
