Why should you listen to me?
When so often being older
I am invisible.
And this I know to be true:
When others talk to our adult children
Over my head I somehow
Feel diminished.
Why should you listen to me?
In the seventh stage of life
Sans teeth sans eyes
Sans everything.
And this I know to be true:
So often you see the ageing body
Not the youthful zest of my mind
Why should you listen to me?
When so often I am forgetful
Of places I’ve hidden my keys,
The names of old friends.
But this I know to be true:
I have life stories and wisdom to share
If you don’t seek out
Will be lost forever.
Why should you listen to me?
What would I know about true love
At my age?
But this I know to be true:
Love deepens and becomes
Less conditional with age.
Relationships have to be worked at
In every stage of life.
Why should you listen to me?
Words like Fragile, vulnerable, dependent
Are used to label and dismiss me.
But this I know to be true:
My life has been a series of new beginnings
The best is yet to be
Why should you listen to me?
This I know to be true:
I come from a long line
Women of strength, wisdom and integrity,
And You are my Grandaughter who
Will continue what we have begun
This is why you should listen to me.
