Independent Newry bookshop The Bookshelf has been nominated for the An Post Bookshop of the Year and they would really appreciate your votes before voting closes next Wednesday 9 September at midday.
The nomination is quite an incredible achievement considering the store isn't even open a year yet. Run by Anthony Reavey and his daughter Niamh the store on Monaghan Street has an incredible range of reading material with an emphasis on books from Irish and local authors but also books available on every topic imaginable. Opened in October 2025 the store has branched out to support the renewed interest in vinyl records with sales of LP's flying and you can even buy the record players to listen to them on!
The Bookshelf has already established itself at the heart of the community with events held throughout the year. Everything from book readings and launches to children's storytelling to hearing migrant stories to comedy to musical evenings and even a Queer Open Mic night - all in the space of their first year!
The An Post Bookshop of the Year competition is designed to acknowledge the significant role played by independent bookshops and local branches of bookshop chains in helping their local communities to find and savour the titles of their choice. Previous winners include Kennys Bookshop and Art Gallery, Galway in 2021, Bridge Street Books,Wicklow in 2022, Halfway Up The Stairs, Greystones, Wicklow in 2023, Little Acorns Bookstore, Derry in 2024 and Chapters Bookstore, Dublin in 2025.
