Newry Mela 2026 has been celebrated as a resounding success, drawing thousands of attendees to one of the region’s most vibrant showcases of culture, diversity and community spirit. Organised by Newry Indian Arts Club, the event brought together families, community groups and visitors from across Newry and beyond for a day filled with colour, music, dance and multicultural celebration at McClelland Park in the city.
The Mela opened with a warm welcome from Councillor Killian Feehan, who emphasised the importance of community events in strengthening relationships and celebrating diversity. This was followed by the Official Opening Ceremony conducted by Infrastructure Minister and MLA Liz Kimmins, who praised the organisers, volunteers and community partners for their dedication and commitment.
A highlight of the day was the presence of Ms Kiran Khatri IFS, Indian Consul, Belfast, whose attendance underscored the strong cultural links and community relationships that Newry Indian Arts Club continues to nurture through the Mela.
Throughout the event, thousands enjoyed a rich programme of cultural performances, music, dance, entertainment and family activities celebrating Indian heritage while embracing the wider multicultural identity of Newry.
