Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade has launched the inaugural Greater Newry Sustainability Conference & Expo, which will take place on Thursday 29 May at the Canal Court Hotel in Newry. The half-day event, entitled 'Building a Sustainable Future & The Green Economy', is free to attend for Newry Chamber members, with a charge of £50 plus VAT for non-members.
The conference is supported by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Kinecx Energy, AIB, Re-Gen and NIE Networks, and will be moderated by Newry broadcaster and journalist Dearbhail McDonald.
Delegates will hear from keynote speakers and panellists with topics including, the future of recycling in Northern Ireland, delivering a lower carbon energy future for Greater Newry, energy transition and renewables, and green credentials covering ESG, sustainable finance, infrastructure and construction.
The event will feature presentations, panel discussions and interactive roundtable sessions and there will be exhibition stands from businesses and organisations involved in the sustainability sector. Booking and more information can be found at newrychamber.com.
Newry Chamber President Conor Patterson said the event would focus on practical, solution-led discussion. "The event will also focus on the need for our region to embrace and develop the Green Economy and will hear from businesses and organisations that are playing an innovative and pivotal role in driving and growing this sector, creating jobs in industries that help us lower our carbon footprint, reduce energy costs and support increased productivity," he said.
Councillor Philip Campbell, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, said: "The Council is delighted to support Newry Chamber with its Sustainability Conference. We are keen to work with and support our local businesses and residents with the challenges of climate change, energy and waste issues and the Conference will provide an excellent forum to discuss these openly and work together on sustainable solutions."
Kinecx Energy CEO Niall Martindale, whose company has been investing in Newry since 2005, said the event would offer businesses a platform to explore practical steps towards a greener economy. "This event provides an important platform to share knowledge and help local businesses navigate the transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Greater Newry and beyond," he said.
Re-Gen CEO Joseph Doherty added: "Re-Gen is delighted to be participating in this inaugural Sustainability conference where key businesses are playing leading and innovative roles in this critical sector. Driving carbon emission reduction is vital to ensure a cleaner future for all."
AIB Head of Retail and Northern Ireland Brian Gillan said the conference offered an opportunity for businesses to connect with available support. "This conference provides an important platform for sharing insights, exploring opportunities and connecting businesses with the support available to help turn sustainability ambition into meaningful action," he said.
