A global manufacturing business that employs more than 10,000 staff is applying for planning permission for a new build plant in Newry that will allow it to move from its current location at Newry Road, Warrenpoint.

Saica Pack Ltd manufactures paper and corrugated fibreboard products. It currently employ around 160 people in Warrenpoint and would plan to employ a similar number at the massive 485,000 sq ft factory on lands located within the Invest NI Business Park at Carnbane in the city.

Permission is being sought for erection of the manufacturing facility approximately 150m east of Modern Tyres for the production of paper/corrugated fibreboard products to incorporate dispatch and storage areas, waste room, office and welfare facility, car/lorry parking, turning and loading areas and associated boundary treatments and site works.

Within the site, provision has been laid out for 147 car parking spaces and 56 HGV spaces with associated circulation areas for dispatch, loading and unloading. 30 bicycle parking stands have been proposed. The applicant also proposes to implement a landscaping plan, in addition to the planting that Invest NI has already undertaken along the site’s rear boundary. The site will be accessed from the internal estate road in Carnbane.

Saica carries out operations in Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Turkey, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United States and Poland. The Saica Group provides sustainable solutions for paper and packaging manufacturing, as well as for waste management and recovery.

Documentation in the planning application explains "The Saica group’s turnover for the financial year ending 2022 was €4,394 million. That a company of this magnitude is willing to locate in Newry ought to be a source of great pride. Albeit the factory is relocating from Warrenpoint this development will ultimately safeguard the company’s manufacturing output in this District for a long time". It is anticipated that the new site will operate 24 hrs per day.
