Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade is hosting a ‘Meet the Local Media’ event on Wednesday, 27 November 2013 in the Bank Bar from 6pm-7pm.
The event will be hosted by UTV’s Marc Mallett and Newry.ie will be one of the local media representatives.
This evening is open to all local businesses who are interested in getting essential tips and advice from local press editors and reporters on how to get noticed by the media and how to advertise effectively.
The event will provide local businesses with the opportunity to network and meet the local media representatives that put together the most important business news in the Greater Newry area.
The panellists include representative’s from the local print, broadcast and online media, including Newry Reporter, Newry Democrat, Destination Newry, IUR FM and Newry.ie. The panel will provide an abundance of useful tips and essential information on scripting press releases, editorial deadlines, hosting press launches, effective advertising and PR advice.

Thursday sees a major conference in Newry designed to help parents support their children in the online and mobile environment.
"Your Kids Online Reputation Matters (What Parents need to know)" is taking place in Bellinis in Newry this Thursday 21st of November from 2pm to 5pm.
The conference also aims to help practitioners who work with children and young people within the health and social care environment cope with the ever expanding pressures and demands of communications in our digital world.
The brainchild of SDLP Councillor Connaire McGreevy the event has attracted a host of internationally known figures from the world of education and digital technology.
Councillor Connaire Mcgreevy was elected in 2011 and is the youngest councillor on Newry and Mourne Council. He has led the digital revolution in the council by campaigning for wifi, encouraging greater use of Facebook and twitter and pushing for technological advancements in the operation of council including open data. Connaire is a firm believer in the need to build awareness of the potential pitfalls of the digital world and in particular bullying and harassment that can occur online.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Emma Short a Chartered Psychologist and Senior research fellow based at the University of Bedfordshire. She is also Co-Director of the National Centre for Cyber Stalking Research and works with individuals who have suffered harassment in on-line situations.
One of Ireland’s and the UK’s leading authorities on Cyber Bullying, emerging technologies in social media and Online Reputation, Wayne Denner will be on hand to facilitate and answer questions from parents and practitioners concerned about mis-use of technology and to talk to young people from local schools about the limitless possibilities the internet has to offer for lifestyle and employability.
Both Dr. Short and Wayne Denner are regular advisers to the Government and charitable bodies as well as working with both the broadcast and print media.
Media law expert Paul McDonnell, regarded as one of the leading figures in defamation and reputation management will also contribute to the conference on social media and current and emerging legislation.

With Winter well under way the team in Autoline in Newry has put together a simple check list for homes and businesses in the area to ensure they are ready and protected whatever the weather.

Freezing and burst pipes can be a real problem
The best way to safeguard your pipes is to insulate them – burst pipes can be a nightmare and prevention is better than a cure. Leave the central heating on for short periods of time throughout the day, and leave the trap door to the roof-space open to allow a flow of warm air. Locate your stopcock – so that you can turn off the entire supply in an emergency.
Water Damage - carry out an annual check on the outside of your property
It's worth taking 10 minutes to do some basic checks around the home to help prevent a small leak from becoming a disaster. Stand in your garden and have a look at the roof and check if snow has dislodged any tiles.
Clear gutters and drainpipes of leaves to prevent blockages and overflows
Have your boiler serviced at least once a year
This can ensure that small issues do not turn into a very cold and costly winter.
Protect against burglary
Insurance claims increase in winter as burglars take advantage of the longer hours of darkness. Most burglars are opportunists, so make sure your home isn't an easy target. Simple measures such as security lighting, key-operated window and door locks and door bolts can go a long way towards deterring a burglar, as will a good guard dog!
Protect against a fire
A fire in the home is probably our most feared hazard. Many fires start at night, so make sure you have a bedtime fire safety routine to help keep your home and family safe. Here are a few simple things which you should do every night:
Unplug all electrical appliances not designed to stay on
Make sure no cigarettes or candles are left burning
Before emptying ashtrays make sure the contents are cold
Put a guard around open fires
Switch off portable heaters
Close the doors of all unoccupied rooms
Be sure your family knows how to get out of the house in case of fire
Make absolutely sure that you have a working smoke alarm
Have a home emergency kit on standby containing torches, tinned food, warm clothing, blankets, and of course, your home insurance documents.

Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade held a very successful evening tonight in The Bank Bar and Bistro where Chamber members and guests listened to members of the local media discuss their organisations and what business people need to do to put their message in front of the general public.
The Meet the Media event was chaired by Mark Mallet, UTV and the panel consisted of Paul Welsh from the Newry Reporter, Rowan Hand from Destination Newry, Shane McBreen from Iúr FM and Columba O'Hare from Newry.ie.
Discussed in detail was the fine line between an item perceived as an advertisement and an item seen as a story, What makes a good press release and increasing your chances of getting it published. Producing a good Advertisement for print and the importance of "picking up the phone" as well as just clicking send in your email outbox.
The importance of a personal relationship with the people you are sending your material to was also stressed.

Buttercrane Shopping Centre has announced it's Late night opening hours.
Starting this week coming from Monday 2nd of December shops will be open till 9pm, and from Monday 9th December they will be open to 10pm.
From Monday 16th December through to Monday 23rd open till 11pm and they will open on Christmas Eve till 5.30pm.
Closed Christmas Day and open St Stephens Day from 1pm - 6pm.

Newry and Mourne Labour Plus Regional Consultation took place last week as a continuation of the partnership agreement between Newry and Mourne District Council and the Municipality of Nieuwegein in the Netherlands to deliver the INTERREG IVC Labour Plus Project.
The Labour Plus Council Officials met with key stakeholders including representatives from the Department of Employment and Learning, Office of First Minister/Deputy First Minister, the Equality Commission, the Northern Ireland Strategic Migration Partnership and members of the business community to discuss labour market integration with a particular focus on vulnerable groups including migrant workers and Irish Travellers.
The Labour Plus Project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and made possible by the INTERREG IVC programme. The project’s global aim is to fully address the INTERREG IVC programme priority “Employment, Human Capital and Education.”

Newry Chamber of Commerce is hosting its first ever Christmas family fun event in association with the Fun House, Newry on Thursday the 19th of December.
The event is open to Newry Chamber members and potential new members and all are invited to bring their children to the Christmas themed family fun day in the state of the art play facilities at the Fun House, Greenbank Industrial Estate, Newry from 4pm-6.30pm.

Staff at Autoline Insurance Group in Newry were surprised to discover recently that the interviews undertaken with an ‘independent consultant’ for what they thought was a corporate video was in fact an interview with the Director of Personal Lines Pricing & Underwriting at Zurich for a series called ‘Undercover Insurer’.
The brainchild of online insurance news outlet ‘Insurance Age’ this five part series has been established to help Zurich interact with front line broker staff to understand some of the day to day issues and frustrations their business faces.
As to the true identity of the consultant , Michael Blaney, Managing Director of Autoline was in on the secret and was there to witness the ‘big reveal' at the end of the episode.
Michael Blaney said, “When we were approached by Zurich to take part in this series I wasn’t sure how my staff would react. The more I thought about it, the more I realised it would give a good insight to individuals’ views about the sector. Although the team were shocked to learn Gareth McChesney’s true identity, I was very proud of how each of the staff members handled the questions and the challenges Gareth presented to them.
“The five staff who were interviewed came across as excellent ambassadors for Autoline and thoroughly knowledgeable about the sector. Gareth was particularly impressed with Denise Curtis, Personal Lines Manager here in the Newry branch. Denise was delighted to win an iPad from Zurich on the day. She will now travel to London with the winners from other episodes to talk about her experience and compete to win a £1,500 prize. We all wish Denise the best of luck in representing the company at this event.”
