St Colman’s Contributes to Children in Crossfire’s Funding of Cancer Hospital. A cheque for £900 has been presented to Children in Crossfire as a result of fund raising in St Colman’s College. During the campaign students sold advent calendars and despite the serious weather disruption managed to raise this impressive amount

This year money raised will help provide equipment and medication to the Ocean Road Cancer Hospital in Tanzania which Children in Crossfire funds. Despite the Two Junior St Colman's students presenting the cheque for £900 to Mr McKinney, Principal of St. Colman’sdifficult conditions, within two years the survival rate of children treated in the hospital has risen from 27% to 60%. This is an amazing achievement which couldn’t have been reached without the support of people within the local community in Ireland and beyond.

An Irish doctor called Dr Trish Scanlan runs the children’s ward. She is an inspiring and dedicated person who works tirelessly providing the utmost care and treatment to the children in her ward. In the short time Dr Trish has been working in the hospital, she has established recognized treatment protocols and trained a team of Tanzanian nurses as well as saving the lives of countless children with cancer.

Dr Trish and her team are now able to treat children immediately providing the best drugs available. She said,

‘The supply of these drugs by Children in Crossfire is a huge contribution towards improved survival rates at the ward. Before this commitment, I struggled every day to balance which children could benefit most from the limited resources I had available. Now I can treat all children with what they need which has had a direct impact on our ability to cure more children.’

You can get an idea of just how much of an impact St Colman's can have on the lives of young children with cancer if they continue to help the Ocean Road Cancer Institute.
