Newry High attend "Chemistry at Work"

Twenty-five students from Newry High school attended a “Chemistry at Work” event at QUB on Wednesday 25th November.

The event showed how the chemistry studied at school is put into the real, everyday world. It is organised and hosted by the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast on behalf of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The students saw and met local industrialists, who gave them hands on demonstrations, exhibits and talks on the role of Chemistry in their industry.

Students saw Forensic Science in Action, they examined acids in Foods at the CAFRE stand, and they had a talk on “Drugs from Bench to Market” from NORBROOK Pharmaceuticals.

Students were enthralled how Lycra brings polymer Chemistry to life and Davidson and Hardy explained how they turned science into business.

The event organiser Dr. Gary Sheldrake said “Chemistry at Work shows students the relevance of what they are studying at school and demonstrates the wide range of job opportunities in the chemical based industries.”
