Write a commentSt. Colman’s College honoured the GCSE class of 2009 at a ceremony in the College on Wednesday, December 9th. This event was in recognition of the outstanding achievements of this year groups in their GCSE examinations.
The event was opened by MC Mr Peadar McLoughlin, who invited the College’s Vice Principal to speak to the assembled students, their parents and invited guests. Mr Henry spoke of the whole College community’s pride in the achievements of this particular year group. He revealed that this group had achieved the College’s highest ever GCSE results and that this achievement had helped to maintain the College’s position as the Number One Boys Grammar school in the North of Ireland. He reminded the boys of the address that had been given to them recently by Uachtarain na hEireann Mrs Mary McAleese in which she had spoken of the importance of education in giving them the power to control their own destinies.
Mr Henry also reminded the boys that their achievements would not have been possible were it not for themselves, their parents and teachers working together as a team in order to allow them to achieve their full potential.
Mr Henry then introduced our Guest Speaker Mr Patrick Harty of FPM Accountants. He spoke of the College Community’s pride in having past pupils like Mr Harty.
Mr Harty used the College’s Mission statements, “Preparing for Life” and “Pursuing Excellence” as the basis for his very enjoyable and enlightening address. He spoke of his pride in being asked to speak at his Alma Mater. He reminded the boys that now that they had achieved such outstanding GCSE results that they should not rest on their laurels but should go on to ensure that they would achieve the results at A level which would do justice to their outstanding ability and work rate. He also spoke of the importance of enhancing their CV by taking part in the many extra curricular activities available to them in the College. He reminded them that employers looked for people who could work as part of a team and what better way would they have of showing that through their involvement in Sport, Music or Drama.
Mr McLoughlin then invited Ms Lisa Toner of Norbrook Laboratories to present the “Norbrook Cup” to the Top GCSE Student in the year group: Snehal Kolloru.
