Newry and Mourne Museum are hosting several Halloween themed events for children this month.
On 21 and 28 October your children can visit Newry and Mourne Museum to unleash their wild and wicked imaginations to create ghostly arts and crafts in celebration of the scariest time of the year.
There are two sessions each day, 10.30am - 12.00pm and again from 1.30pm – 3.00pm. This activity is appropriate for children aged 5 - 11 years. Numbers for these workshops are limited so pre-booking of places is essential.
Also, on 31 October, join renowned storyteller Eamonn Keenan, as he weaves tales of strange goings on, witches, ghosts, and all sorts of fairy folk.
There will be two sessions, starting at 11.30am and 1.30pm, which will last 40 minutes approximately. This is appropriate for children aged 4 - 11 years. Numbers for these sessions are limited so pre-booking of places is essential.

Kevin McAleer is making a welcome return to Newry in November.
It's part of a Iúr Cinn Fleadh initiative to host several events throughout the year as well as at the August Festival
Kevin McAleer has been described as ‘one of the top ten living comedians in the world’. His ‘Uncle Colm’ persona in the hit TV show Derry Girls has brought a whole new wave of followers to his latest live show, Why Am I Here?.
Those new fans are fast discovering what the regulars have known for years – the Tyrone space cadet’s legendary command of language, timing and delivery remains razor sharp, and his timeless brand of pure balderdash is funnier than ever.
In Why Am I Here?, Kevin asks the big questions and comes up with some deeply stupid answers. If you’re expecting to be bored, you’ll be disappointed.
The show takes place Thursday 30 November at Bellini’s, Newry. Doors open at 7pm for the 8pm show.

There are no excuses for not getting involved in this year's exciting Halloween celebrations in Newry, the emphasis being on fun for the entire family with dressing up for the occasion very much encouraged. In fact we might even do it ourselves!
The Family Spooky Carnival and Fireshow runs next Friday 27 October with two main locations in the city - Newry Market and Marcus Square and entry is free of charge.
Newry Twilight Market
The wonderfully spooky Twilight Market will take place from 5 to 10pm at Newry Market with the venue decorated to within an inch of its life. Already 80% of the stalls are filled with food and quirky Halloween things. There will be no shortage of food and drink offerings with bar facilities on site.
Providing the entertainment over the course of the Twilight Market will be three outstanding musical acts Ria Maguire, The Uplifted Gospel Choir and and an awsome new band from Warrenpoint called The New Leaves.
Marcus Square
Marcus Square activities run from 5-8.30pm with the event appealing to younger families. There will be five or six scarily decorated carnival rides staffed by spooky characters. There'll also be two half hour fire shows by Fire Poise at 5.30pm and 7pm. One of the artists is from the world famous Cirque du Soleil.
As if that wasn't enough Marcus Square will also see Arts Ekta bringing in Mexican Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) arts and crafts and stilt walkers and there will even be a children's disco.
Organisers want everyone to turn up in fancy dress if they can. At both of the locations there will be plenty of spot prizes for costumes that catch the eye so be sure to make the effort.
Eoin McCartan, Events Supervisor, Newry Mourne and Down District Council said "It's a chance for all the families in the Newry area to come out, enjoy and be a part of this years spooky Halloween celebrations. It would be great to see as many people as possible wearing fancy dress on the night and who knows you might even win a prize!

Belfast and District NUJ are organising the Lyra McKee Inaugural Lecture at the start of November to celebrate the life of the young journalist who was shot dead in Derry in 2019.
The event is open to all and free of charge but tickets need to be booked in advance.
Taking place on the eve of International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists you can join NUJ colleagues, Lyra's friends and family to celebrate our respected and much valued member who lost her life in such a tragic way.
Guest speaker on the day is Susan McKay, journalist and author and Ireland’s press ombudsperson. “Lyra - let her voice not be forgotten.”
Additionally Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, will speak along with: Natasha Hirst, President, NUJ; Seamus Dooley, Irish Secretary, NUJ; Nichola McKee Corner, Lyra’s sister; Father Martin McGill and Alison Millar, film maker.
Belfast and District NUJ include local NUJ members from the Newry area and surrounds.
The lecture takes place on 1 November 2023 at Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast.
Reception 7pm, lecture 7.30pm and refreshments at approximately 9.30pm.

Newry U3A are holding a Memorial Service at the end of October to remember members who have died during the previous year. It's the 15th year of the event and all are welcome to attend.
This year the group are remembering Shirley Milligan, Kathleen Sheehan, Michael Chiswell, Larry Doyle, Margaret Comer, Helen Doherty, Betty Mynes, Margaret McCusker and all their deceased members.
The Service will take place at 2pm on Tuesday 31 October in Ballybot House, Cornmarket, Newry in the 2nd Floor Conference Room. It will be a mixture of reflections, music and song and will be followed by refreshments.

November sees the fourth Sparkling Afternoon Tea fundraising event in Newry and testifying to its popularity is the fact that it is already sold out!
The afternoon tea event Hosted by Be Inspired To Be takes place 10 November at the Canal Court Hotel and features food, drink, entertainment, fashion and even a best-dressed prize to be won.
This year the proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support. Tania Bailie, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan in NI said, “Macmillan is needed now more than ever and we rely almost entirely on public donations to make a difference. We’re here to help people living with cancer all over Northern Ireland but we can't do it without our amazing fundraisers. We are so grateful to Belinda for organising this amazing event to support our work."
Belinda O’Neill, founder of Be Inspired To Be, spoke of her joy of being involved in the planning of the event, with the charity aid resonating on a personal level.
She said “I’m delighted to organise this the 4th Ladies Charity Sparkling Afternoon Tea event, for a cause which is very close to my heart”.

Gather the family and hit Newry city centre on your bikes this Sunday 29 October for 'Tricks and Beats', a fun Halloween themed cycle around the city.
Organised by Newry BID as part of their Health in the City month the event is encouraging people to get out and exercise in a fun way. Additionally everyone is positively encouraged to put on their best Halloween outfit and there will be spot prizes for the best dressed.
It will be an easy cycle on a flat route and It's a chance for one and all to take part in a fun uplifting event and something the children will remember for long after they get off their bikes. It might even encourage them to use their bike more!
DJ Cuchulainn will be leading the way on his special bike playing spooky tunes to get everyone in the Halloween mood. There will also be a few treats along the way.
No booking is required. All you have to do is turn up at the entrance to the Albert Basin Greenway at 2pm. Tricks and Beats will run from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
