Newry man Eamon White's remarkable performance in the Newry City 10km at the weekend has set a new benchmark in the UK V55 10km rankings. His time of 0:33:05 not only earned him a second-place finish overall but also propelled him to the top of the 2024 UK V55 rankings, surpassing the previous leader by a significant 13 seconds. This feat is all the more impressive considering the challenges faced with a severe quad injury in late 2023 which brought his XC season to an abrupt end.
Although the Newry man is officially registered with North Belfast Harriers, over the past 12 months Eamon has been training with Newry Athletic Club at the track, under the direction of coach Kookie O'Hagan. As all athletes know, on the track there is no hiding place & suffering loves company, so no better company to have for Kookie's sessions than Newry AC athletes Andrew Hicks & Mark Malone. The trio have worked together through a long winter with the fruits well and truly starting to bear.
White's performance should inspire both seasoned athletes and newcomers to the sport. His journey underscores the importance of perseverance, expert coaching, and the right training partners. As the UK V55 10km rankings have been reshuffled, all eyes will be on the unassuming White as the benchmark for V55 category.
