Newry's Couch to 5k initiative at St Colmans Sports Complex is ready for another team of participants following last weeks second graduation night with all ages and abilities successfully completing the programme.
Couch to 5k is available Monday and Thursday evenings at 6pm St Colman’s Sports Complex and is delivered by Everybody Active coaches together with support from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
Couch to 5k is designed to gradually build up a person’s ability to run 5k in just nine weeks.
The programme is a mixture of walking and running, gradually increasing levels of fitness and stamina. Everybody Active is a government initiative to embed physical activity into daily life.
The sessions cost only £1, last 30-45mins and are perfect for anyone thinking about exercising to help improve fitness or general heath or for people with a busy lifestyle who wish to fit exercise in as part a weekly routine.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Chairperson, Cllr Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “Couch to 5k is one of many programmes supported by both Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and Everybody Active to help achieve a more active community. It is great to see the programme continuing to grow and encouraging residents in our district to exercise.”
Peter Smyth, Duty Manager at St Colman’s Sports Complex added, “Couch to 5k is available for anyone to come to whether that’s walking or running you’ll be warmly welcome. There are a number of exciting activities coming up for anyone to be involved in for example, we have a six week Walking Group commencing Thursday 25 August at 6.30pm and also a Teen to 3K programme for teenage girls commencing on Monday 12 September at 5.30pm.
