The final Newry ‘Couch to 5k’ graduation night took place in St Colman’s Sports Complex last week to celebrate the 2016 graduates of the programme.
All ages and experience levels completed the programme on Monday and Thursday evenings at 6pm. ‘Couch to 5k’ is designed to gradually build up a person’s ability to run 5k in just 9 weeks and the programme is a mixture of walking and running, gradually increasing levels of fitness and stamina. It is perfect for someone that has been thinking about exercising and wants an extra bit of motivation to help improve fitness and general health. The sessions all last roughly 30 to 45 minutes and participants who have busy lifestyles have found that the programme helps to build a weekly exercise routine.
The programme was led by Everybody Active coaches working in the Newry area with support from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick attended the graduation and said, “Couch to 5k is one of many programmes supported by both Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and Everybody Active to help achieve a more active community. It is great to see the programme continuing to grow and encouraging residents in our district to exercise.”
Duty Manager at St Colman’s Sports Complex, Peter Smyth, said “This was the final graduation night for 2016. Over 150 people have graduated through the programme over the past year and it’s been great to see everyone having fun and getting fitter at the same time. Plans are well under way for the next ‘Couch to 5K’ 2017 which will start on Monday 9 January 2017.”
