Write a commentIrish FA Grassroots Development Centre in conjunction with Newry and Mourne District Council good relations unit are hosting an evening at Sean Hollywood Arts Centre on Friday the 20th of November from 7 to 9pm to recognise the contribution of local players, coaches and volunteers to promoting female sport.
In attendance will be Patrick Nelson, CEO Irish FA. Also Raymond Kennedy, President and National Womens Manager, Alfie Wylie.
The evening will further endorse the development work undertaken over the past 18 months and acknowledge an increase of over 1300% in girls and women participating in recognised competition.
EU funding along with local funding programmes have provided over 3000 opportunities (SportNI matrix) for females to play and coach football in the Newry, South Armagh and the Mournes area.
Through the efforts of local clubs and volunteers a more sustainable development model has emerged to continue offering greater opportunities to primary, post primary schoolgirls as well as creating a pathway for players to compete at a senior level, highlighted by the remarkable success of Kilkeel Ladies FC who lifted the Division 4 title and league cup in their first season.
