Newry 1’s 1-1 South Antrim 1’s

Newry hosted South Antrim on a wet and windy Saturday hoping to finally kick start their season.  The home side got off to a strong start pinning South back but were unable to make their early pressure pay.  Soon the visitors were starting to play their way into the game and were able to make their possession pay scoring a well worked short corner to take the lead.

Newry pushed forward in search of the equaliser, creating a number of opportunities, the best of which were missed by Jeremy Greer and Keith McWilliams. It wasn’t long until Greer made a mends when he was one hand to pick up a low drive into the circle from David Andrews and flick it over the advancing keeper.

The second half was an open game with both sides creating chances to take the lead.  Newry had keeper Francis McGivern to thank for keeping them in the game at times as the home side went in search of the winner.  Greer had a number of chances to get his and Newry’s second of the game but found the South keeper in great form, pulling of some great reaction saves, the best of which came with only seconds left of the clock when again David Andrews drove the ball into the circle where Jeremy Greer at full stretch deflected the ball on target only for the keeper to flick out a toe and touch the ball around the post.

Newry 3’s 2-2 Campbellians 2’s

Newry played host to Campbellians on a wet and windy afternoon. The game started with Newry going on the offensive pushing into the Campbellians half having a number of good opportunities to go ahead but unable to capitalise on these chances. Campbellians caught Newry on the counterattack pushing down the right flank and playing the ball into a forward who deflected the ball past the Newry keeper who couldn't stop the attempt, 1-0 to Campbellians. Newry restarted the game continuing to push into the Campbellians half winning a number of short corners but could not get the ball into the net.

Second half started evenly with both teams pushing for a goal. Newry on the attack though a number of passes McMinn found himself able to shoot, a Campbellians defender tried to stop the shot but the power behind it meant he could only deflect it into his own net. Score 1-1. With Newry on the front foot they continued to press but could not break down the Campbellians defence. On the attack Foster continued his individual efforts to skilfully get past a number of Campbellians defenders and get his shot away and into the back of the net, 2-1 Newry. Newry continued pushing for another goal that would not come instead again the Campbellian team to get a goal from a counter attack, 2-2. Newry continued to search for a third goal that would not come, the final score 2-2. Next week Newry travel to Portrush.
