North Down 1’s 2-3 Newry 1’s

Newry came away with all three points after a hard fought game against North Down on Saturday, this was hot on the heels of a 5-1 victory over Ballynahinch on Monday.

North Down were by far the brighter side in the opening exchanges, however Newry managed to weather this and slowly get themselves into the game. The visitors got on the score sheet first through a penalty flick when a John Taylor effort was blocked on the line by the defenders foot. Colin McKnight stepped up and coolly slotted home.

In the second half North pressed forward looking for the equalizer and were rewarded when they jumped on some sloppy play in the Newry defence to get back to one all. It was end to end after this with both sides looking to press on. Keith Mcwilliams rocketed Newry back in from with a great strike from the left hand side of the circle. However the lead was short lived when John Taylor fouled a North forward in the circle and a penalty stroke was awarded which was dispatched with ease.

During the fourth quarter Newry started to get on top forcing a number of short corners and opportunities. John Taylor fired home a drag flick with 8 minutes remaining to give Newry a 3-2 lead which they held on to until the final whistle and complete a tough victory.
