Cliftonville 1’s 1-3 Newry 1’s

Newry travelled to CIYMS on Saturday in their latest league match against Cliftonville. Newry started very sluggishly turn the ball over very easily with poor and miss placed passes.  Cliftonville forced a number of early short corners but were unable to take advantage of them with stand in keeper Josh Porter making a couple of good stops.  As the half wore on Newry started to become more dominant pinning Cliftonville in their own half but as has been the story of the season so far for Newry, the chances created were wasted.  It wasn’t until 5 minutes before half time that Newry finally got the break through from the unlikeliest of sources, Colin Henning flicking home high into the net from a short corner.  Again right on the stroke of half time Henning fired home an identical short corner high into the net to give Newry a two nil advantage at the break, Henning had only previously scored once in his Newry career.

In the second half Newry dominated right from the whistle with Keith Mcwilliams going very close with a reverse stick shot only a matter of seconds into the half.  Newry pressed further forward but again were wasting their chances.  Cliftonville pulled one back with a quick break away to make it two one with still 20 minutes remaining.  However Newry scored very quickly when again Henning was involved at the short corner when his shot was deflected in by Jeremy Greer.  Newry continued to push forward but could not find another goal and with two minutes remaining Cliftonville were awarded a penalty stroke which Josh Porter did brilliantly to save and keeper the score at 3-1.

Team: Porter, D. England, C. Henning, J. Greer, A. Baird, N. Davenport, R. Irwin, N. McKnight, C. McKnight, K. McWilliams, A. Irwin, M. McCullough, K. McCombe
