Linden Cup Final
Newry Olympic Hockey Club take on Portadown in the Linden Cup Final on New Years Day at 3pm, a game sure to be a thriller played at Derramore Park, home of Harlequins. We wish the lads well and everyone is invited to come along and support them.
Antrim 1’s 3-4 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Antrim for their final league of 2013 with the aim of keeping their unbeaten league run going. Antrim started solidly but it was Newry who had the majority of the possession in the opening stages and it was the away side who struck first when John Taylor fired a low drive into the circle with Robert Irwin doing well to deflect it goal wards and past the Antrim keeper. Again it was Irwin on the score sheet as he is turning all his spade work into goals this season. Irwin picked the ball up on the left and drove towards the Antrim circle, after a neat one two with Kyle McCombe he was able to fire the ball below the advancing keeper to make it two nil. Antrim pressed forward looking to get back into the game and they did with a deflected cross beating Robin Hanlon in goals.
Newry then started to get a hold on the game again and Keith McWilliams restored Newry’s two goal lead when he drove into the circle and rounded the keeper to slot home the third of the game. Just before half time David Andrews suffered a nasty mouth injury and had to go off to seek hospital treatment. John Taylor fired home Newry’s forth of the game from a short corner to give them a commanding lead at half time.
Antrim were never going to give up in this game and really pressed forward in the second period. With Newry unable to finish off their chances at the other end to seal the win, Antrim were starting to pile pressure the Newry defence. When they scored through a short corner 10 minutes into the second half they really had the bit between their teeth. They got their third with a fine sweeping move to give Newry a nervy end to the game but the away side managed to hold on for the win.
