Cookstown 1’s 5-1 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to recently crowned league champions Cookstown on Saturday in their final game of a long hard season. Their work would be cut out for them as Cookstown were free scoring in recent weeks.
Cookstown were playing like league champions dominating much of the play and restricting Newry to just a few counter attacks. The visitors were playing with their backs to the wall but were able to keep out the home side until a few minutes before the break. Cookstown had forced a number of consecutive short corners before the pressure told and after Greer had initially cleared the first attempt off the line the rebound was fired home to leave the score one nil at the break.
In the second half Cookstown flew out of the traps and really stepped through the gears as they scored just 45 seconds into the second period. They did not slow down and scored two more goals in the next five minutes to leave Newry reeling.
The visitors managed to pull one back with a short corner that Colin McKnight fired home but it did little to dent the Cookstown team’s confidence. Just before the end they made it five to finish off a resounding win.
