Newry had the short journey to make to Kilkeel this week to take on the Mourne men’s thirds. From the beginning Newry knew that it was going to be a tough match against a youth full Kilkeel side. Though Newry were able to push Kilkeel back during the early stages and managing to win a short corner. This was slotted home superbly by Warren Adams from the top of the D to give Newry the early lead. Newry kept on this pressure and narrowly missed a second goal with McCaguies deflection beating the keeper but only to hit the post. Kilkeel pressed hard now and after a few chances scored making 1-1. Kilkeel kept this pressure up and won a short corner that they capitalised on making the score 2-1. The half not yet finished Gareth Moffett made a solo run and calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net. Score 2-2 at half time. From the start of the second half Kilkeel dominated attack, Newrys defence was on top form and Sam Henry made many crucial saves to deny Kilkeel. Late arrivals Michael and Mark McCullough were imimeatily brought on as replacements and had an impact right away. Mark had the pace to beat the defence before crossing to a waiting Michael to score into the top corner of the Kilkeel goal. With the score 3-2 Kilkeel were chancing the equaliser with attack after attack but the Newry defence denied them that chance and won the game. Newry travel to Cookstown on Saturday.

Newry Olympic Ladies 3 South Antrim 1
On Saturday, 27th September, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI travelled to Friends, Lisburn to play South Antrim1st XI Ladies. From the whistle, Newry were on the attack having won pass back and were awarded the first corner of the match within ten minutes. South Antrim saved the shot but Newry’s Captain, Laverne Inns scored on the rebound putting Newry in the lead. Two minutes later after some beautiful play from the midfield players, Aideen Costello, Caroline Madden and Lynne Ervine, the ball was fed through to the forward line where Aimee Magowan scored again, dodging numerous S-A players. However, South-Antrim battled back and fifteen minutes into the first half scored their first goal against Newry. Newry’s defence kept the ball strong switching between Nicola Shields, Diane Mc Minn, Alison Gamble and Laura Simpson. South Antrim put up a good fight forcing Newry goalkeeper Carol Waddell to come right out to the top of the circle and clear the ball to the left back. After twenty minutes Debbie Barry drove up the left wing into the circle and put Newry into a three goal lead.
At the beginning of the second half both teams came out strong with South Antrim and Newry having chances at various points of the match. Newry for the most part dominated possession and Anna Bingham, Naomi Dickson and Sara Adams held the South Antrim at bay toward the end of the second half so that the game ended with the final score Newry Olympics 3 South Antrim 1. NOHC Coach Norman Toombs was pleased that the team made a good start in the Senior 4 league. Next week Newry ladies are away to play Coleraine.

Annadale 1’s 3-1 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to Carryduff to take on Annadale in their third game of the Premier League campaign. Newry were underdogs in this game but managed to take the lead through a well worked short corner with Colin McKnight calmly slotting the ball through the keepers league. The lead was short lived as Annadale took advantage of Newry’s lack of concentration and scored on their next attack to bring the scores level at half time. Annadale had much of the possession but were not really penetrating the Newry defence. The game ebbed and flowed and was great for spectators as neither team gave an inch in this fairly contested battle. Newry picked up a few injuries and had to reshuffle the pack to fit in replacements. As the away side pushed forward they were getting caught out on the counter attack and this is how Annadale won the game. Two quick counter-attacks with a goal resulting from each finished off the game with the game ending 3-1. Newry travel again to Annadale in the Kirk Cup on Tuesday Evening.
