Newry travelled to Deramore Park on Saturday to take on Harlequins on Saturday in their second game of the premier league season. The score line does not reflect the match whatsoever as Newry somehow managed to miss countless chances.
Newry started strongly and were pinning the home side back but could not make their pressure count, they were made to pay as ‘Quins caught them on the break and scored against the run of play. Newry continued to press forward and were creating chances but could just not apply the finishing touches. Veteran keeper Ian Kelly in the ‘Quins goals was having a blinding game and made a sublime stick save from a David England short corner. At half time it was one nil but the visitors were confident they could get back into the game.
Newry flew out of the traps in the second half and again created plenty of opportunities. Mark McCullough seen his attempt roll along the line with Alex Irwin just unable to stretch far enough to tap in. Within minutes Kyle McCombe bamboozled the home defence and was left with just the keeper to beat on the line but lost control at the vital moment. From the resulting clearance Colin McKnight won the ball back and again with just the keeper to beat, was unable to convert. It was Mathew Russell’s turn to be denied by the keeper who dived bravely at his feet to block his shot, the ball fell to McKnight but his shot was cleared off the line. Newry were again caught on the break and were two down against the run of play. From another attack Mathew Russell was again denied, this time a defender on the line cleared after he had blasted past the keeper.
Quin’s showed Newry how to score as again they broke on the counter attack and made it three. Newry were now loosing shape as they tried somehow to find a way back into the game with fifteen minutes to go. Irwin and McKnight again missed chances before Harlequins made it four. A score line that the visitors could now believe at the final whistle. Newry travel to Kilkeel on Friday evening for their next game.
