Newry 2’s 5-2 Banbridge 2’s

Newry hosted local rivals and league leaders on Saturday at 2.30pm.  Right from the first whistle Newry were on the attack and controlling the pace of the game.  It wasn’t long before the homes side had their first chance with Dale Pollock one on one with the Banbridge keeper but could only hit the advancing keeper with his effort.  Only a matter of minutes later Newry did get their break through with a reverse stick shot from McWilliams breaking the deadlock.  It was soon two when McWilliams and Pollock linked up well for the latter to slot home against his former side with only ten minutes gone.  The home side took their foot of the throttle slightly to let Banbridge back into the game with a simple tap in at the back post.

Newry rallied again and got their two goal advantage back again through McWilliams only for Banbridge to score through Simon Magowan right on the stroke of half time to leave the score 3-2 at the break.

The second half turned out to be a more cagey affair with a more open and flowing game, chance coming at both ends.  David Andrews had the chance to increase Newry’s lead but the Banbridge keeper pulled off a great save to keep them in the game.  He was called into action again and after making the initial save again from Andrews, before blocking the second attempt from Jeremy Greer with his helmet.

The home side then stepped up another gear with Keith McWilliams completing his hat-trick by bundling the ball over the line after the keeper again made a great save from a David England reverse stick shot.  There was still time at the end for McWilliams to get his forth rather fortunately beating the keeper with a miss hit shot which bobbled over the keeper and barely crossed the line.

Newry Olympic 3-0 PSNI

On Friday 6th March 2015, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played the PSNI Ladies 1st XI at home at 7.45 p.m.

PSNI won the toss and and started the brighter of the two sides but solid Newry defending kept the early onslaught out.  Newry opened the scoring after winning their first short corner of the game with a great routine straight off the training pitch. Lynne Ervine received the injection and hit the ball to Ali Gamble who deflected the ball smartly into the back of the PSNI net eleven minutes into the game.   Newry retained possession of the ball well keeping the pressure on the PSNI defence and ten minutes before the end of first half, right back Diane Mc Minn played a well weighted ball through the PSNI midfield, for Debbie Barry to latch on to before firing the ball into the circle for Laverne Inns to finish off.

At the beginning of the second half both teams came out strong with Newry being awarded several short corners in the first ten minutes of the second half but finding no goals.  Both sides were cancelling each other out for large parts of the second half until a great passing move lead to Kathryn Baird finding Laverne Inns in the centre of the circle as she calmly slotted home to get her second of the game and kill the match off as a contest.
