North Down 1s 4-2 Newry 1s

Newry travelled to comber to face North Down on the back of a great win over Bangor the previous week. However Newry travelled with a depleted team and were up against it right from the first whistle. North down flew out of the traps and straight into their smooth passing game leaving Newry to chase them in most of the opening exchanges. The home side didn’t take long before they found a way through the Newry defence with their quick passing and within 15 minutes they where two up with two very well taken goals.

It took this to waken Newry up who only started to play in the last ten minutes of the first half when they forced a hatful of short corners with no end product.

In the second half Newry were the better team and dominated much of the possession, but North Down were clinical in front of goal and went three up showing Newry how to finish off their chances. Newry pulled one back through Kyle McCome and then got another when Richard Nummy dispatched a fierce penalty flick. Newry ere now camped in the North Down half and pushing for the equaliser which just never came, on a counter attack in the last few minutes, north down grabbed a fourth and put the game to bed.

Newry 3s 7-2 NICS 5s

Newry needed to make a mends for their lack luster performance last week in their defeat away to Portrush and they did so in style against NICS this weekend. Newry blew Service out of the water and put the game to bed in the first half. In a fast paced game Newry slammed home four first half goals with Jonny McWilliams notching up a first half hat trick and Lee Ervine getting his name on the score sheet. Service tried to get themselves back in the game in the second half and for a short while they did when they scored two really quick goals through a short corner which Newry keeper Peter Elmore will be angry he didnt keep out which went between his legs and another through a short corner. It took débutante Clint Elliot who scored his first goal of the season and his first for the club to easy Newry nerves. McWilliams pilled forward to get his forth of the game before James Niblock finished off the scoring with his first goal of the new year.

Newry Ladies 0-5 Owls Ladies

On Saturday 12th January Newry Ladies 1st XI (Senior 4) played at home against Owls Ladies 1st XI (Senior 3) in a Plate match. From the whistle Newry forwards and mids were on the attack narrowly missing a couple of goals in the first fifteen minutes. Owls fought back hard but with Newry’s strong defence, they were kept out of the circle on numerous occasions by the backs and the sweeper.   Towards the end of the first half Newry sustained a lot of pressure in the circle which produced some terrific saves and dives from keeper Helen Kee.  Newry were awarded two short corners in the last few minutes of the first half but unfortunately failed to score.  On a break Owls succeeded in scoring from a short corner and took the lead at the end of the first half with a well deserved goal which took Owls into a two-nil lead at half time.
