Armagh GAA Club members launched Rith 2014 today at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh during the Armagh Down Hurling National League clash.
Rith is a relay run to promote the speaking and use of the Irish language and it starts in Baile Bhuirne, Cork and ends in Belfast.
The run covers 1000km and travels over nine days through 14 counties and calls at Newry on the way through.
The race takes place between the 7th and the 15th of March and involves the carrying of a special hand-carved baton, and a hidden message within, by different groups over each kilometre throughout the nine day run. The relay, which aims to raise money to create a fund for the promotion of the Irish language, finish with a festival in the heart of Belfast on March the 15th.
"We are excited about the new route for Rith 2014," Cormac Ó Feinneadha, event manager of Rith 2014 said. "This year is different as we will be running through the night in Dublin. Rith has grown and grown since the festival began in 2010. When the new route is revealed different groups will get a chance to buy a kilometre and register with this enjoyable event at www.rith.ie."
Rith 2014 is the third run organised since 2010 and the concept was inspired by the Basque County, where a similar language festival, the "Korrika" is celebrated since the 1980s and in which more than 600,000 people participate.
