Rural Bank Closures Condemned

Following the decision of Ulster Bank to close ten branches in the province local politicians have roundly condemned the move to close local branches in Newtownhamilton and Tandragee.

The ten branches will close early next year along with 14 south of the border.

Sinn Féin Councillor Barra Ó Muirí commenting on Ulster Bank in Newtownhamilton said that it was very disappointing and he will be raising the issue at the next full meeting of Newry and Mourne Council. Barra said "This is a disappointing blow not only to Newtownhamilton but also to a large section of the South Armagh area,  local businesses and the community. Many of those who have contacted me about the closure announcement are angry that Ulster Bank have shown very little loyalty or duty of care to them as  customers. The excuses the Bank have given for taking these actions are feeble". 

Meanwhile his Sinn Féin colleague Newry & Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan commenting on the closures in Tandragee and Newtownhamilton  said "This is terrible news. Ulster Bank is showing very little respect for rural communities in particular. I encourage all customers affected by this decision to close these Branches to contact the Bank to register their disapproval".

SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley also expressed his disappointment the closure of the branches saying that the closures ‘will be a huge blow to the community’:

“While some banking services may be available at post offices, there is no substitute for a local branch, particularly for small businesses who will now have to deal with a reduced banking service.

“This will be a huge blow to the community.

“As we all saw during the technical crisis experienced by Ulster Bank during the summer of 2012, the importance of having a fully staffed branch at times of emergency or crisis is vital.

“Tandragee and Newtownhamilton are vibrant communities with many local businesses who rely on Ulster Bank. Banking through the post office is a poor substitute for businesses in the area, who will have reduced services as a result. I am disappointed that Ulster Bank is showing so little social responsibility to rural communities. The people of Tandragee and Newtownhamilton deserve better.”
