Senior Men

Our senior men went into Sunday’s game to home to Forkhill knowing that a win would see them top their championship group and into the quarter-final of the competition, but it wasn’t to be for the Camlough side as Forkhill ran out winners by four points, 1 – 14 to 2 – 7.

Three pointed frees in the opening five minutes got Forkhill off to a good start with Paul O’Rourke replying for the Shane’s, again from a placed ball. The sides then swapped a point apiece with O’Rourke on target on again for the Shane’s before four points on the trot, two from frees, gave Forkhill a commanding six-point advantage. A free from Connaire Mackin and a long-range effort from Greg McCabe reduced the deficit to four and another a point each from both sides, Connaire Mackin on target for the Shane’s, saw Forkhill go into the half-time break four to the good, 0 – 9 to 0 – 5.

Forkhill stretched their lead to five with an early second-half point before a Connaire Mackin penalty following a foul on Mark McCabe got the Shanes back to within two. The teams then exchanged frees with Connaire Mackin on target again for the Camlough side but two points in as many minutes kept the score-board ticking over for Forkhill. A goalkeeping error saw Forkhill register their only goal of the contest but the Shane’s hit back almost immediately with the their second three-pointer of the game when Mark McCabe rose highest to flick the ball to the net. The Shane’s trailed by four at this stage and pointed free from Paul O’Rourke had them back to within three but it was Forkhill who got the final score of the game to win on a score-line of 1 – 14 to 2 – 7.

As a result of Forkhill’s win and other results the Shane’s finished second in their group and will now meet Grange in a championship play-off game, details of which are still to be confirmed.
