The Newry AC athletes competed all over the country this week in a variety of events – from International Mountain Running, Charity Runs, a triathlon to Orienteering.

Tuesday 4th September – Mill Hill Race, Castlewellan

9 Newry AC Athletes attended the annual Mill Hill Race in Castlewellan on Tuesday night.  This is a charity race organised by Newcastle AC and one not for the faint hearted.  The race starts at the bottom of the ‘big’ hill at the Mill and it’s a one mile race/climb to the Library at the Town Square.  A tough but enjoyable run.  There was a great club turnout resulting in 3 age category winners, 2 runners in the top 10 and a total of 4 in the top 20.

On form Rory Mulvaney was the first home for Newry AC.  Rory rocketed in with a 6th placing, 2nd MO in a time of 6:16.  Hughie ‘ Hurricane’ Mackin came in 9th overall, 4th MO in a time of 6:26;  Jonny Gregg came in on Hughie’s’ heels in 11th place taking 1st MV45  in a time of 6:27;  Esther Dickson was 20th overall,  1st FO & lifted 3rd Female with a time 6:51.  Sarah Jane Beattie came in 38th, 3rd FO, 7:22.  Meadow McCauley - 57th - 2nd FJ16, 8:32. Anna Fegan - 61st 3rd FJ16, 8:46.  Chloe O’Hare -76th, 4th FJ16, 9:33 and Joanne McCauley - 77th 1st FV40, 9:38.

Well done everyone and to the Newry AC supporting crew, Kookie & Aislinn.

Saturday 8th September –  British/Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships, Wicklow

Meadow McCauley was proud to put on the Northern Ireland colours and represent in the U17s NI Junior Mountain Running Squad on Saturday.

This was for the British/Irish Mountain Running Championships held in Glendalough, Wicklow.  With heavy rain in the early hours of the race morning it made the ground conditions that bit more slippery that took a few race casualties. The course was a tight 820ft climb through forest trail into open mountain then a fast technical return descent back to the finish line.  The Northern Ireland U17 girls were up against experienced competition from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and were happy with a 4th placing ahead of the Irish Team.   Meadow has gained a wealth of  experience and great advice from a fantastic NI coaching team which has inspired her to train hard towards the new 2019 mountain season.

Saturday 8th September -  Dublin Triathlon

Sunday 9th September – PIPs Hope and Support Annual 5k/10k, Newry

Noel Carr and club junior Grace Hamilton attended the annual PIPs Charity event in Newry on Sunday.  A very well organised event with huge local support, Grace enjoyed the run and Noel recorded a great 10k time of 43:18.  All for a great cause.

Sunday 9th September – Orienteering in Kilbroney Forest Park

With navigation closely linked to the mountain running scene it is recommended for  runners to learn and refresh their map reading and compass work skills.  With an Autumn Trophy Orienteering event planned by the accomplished mountain runner and adventure racer,  Moire O’Sullivan,  taking place in Kilbroney Forest Park on Sunday, club junior David Burns took on the opportunity to enter and was rewarded with taking 1st place in the Orange Category.  Good practice for David who will be competing with his dad, Charles, in the Mourne Mountain Marathon next week-end.  Meadow McCauley only home from the British/Irish Championships in Wicklow took on the challenging Green Course and lifted First F16 – a practice ahead of her representing for Ireland in the Orienteering Internationals in Scotland at start of October and Northern Ireland in the Regionals in England at the end of September.
