A massive well done to our U12 girls who took part in the annual Margaret King Hospice tournament in Burren on Saturday and won the shield competition.
The girls played a total of five group games, winning three of them and losing two which saw them progress to the quarter-final of the shield competition. In this game they were paired against Rostrevor and played some great football to see them to the semi-final stage and game against a strong St Brigid’s side. Once again, the young Shane’s battled hard to earn their place in the final of the shield where they faced a very good Silverbridge side. The final produced some excellent football from both sides but the Shane’s saved their best display until last and they produced some of their best football of the day to claim the win and along with it the shield title – well done to all the girls and their management team on a brilliant win.

Training for the U12 girls continues on Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7.00pm.
Senior Men
Our senior men made it two wins from two in the championship with a convincing six-point win away to Wolfe Tones on Saturday, 2 – 11 to 1 – 8.
There was a cagey opening to the game with both teams only managing a point each in the opening ten minutes with Neil Paul Lennon getting the Shane’s score. A Paul O’Rourke point then put the Shane’s in front before two pointed frees from the boot of Connaire Mackin edged them further in front before the sides then swapped points with Paul O’Rourke on target for the away side. Minutes later a brilliant move from the Shane’s saw them register their first goal of the contest to put them six to the good; the move began with full-back Michael McParland making a brilliant to clearance to Ciaran Mackin who in turn moved the ball on to his brother Connaire. A quick interchange between Mackin and Marc Feehan followed before the ball made its way to David McCabe who made no mistake from close range, palming the ball to the back of the Wolfe Tones net. Connaire Mackin followed this up almost immediately with another well taken point before a late Wole Tone’s free saw them trail by six at the break, 1 – 6 to 0 – 3.
Wolfe Tones made the best possible start to the second-half when they goaled in the opening minute but the Shane’s responded immediately when less than a minute later Paul O’Rourke fielded a high ball before turning inside his marker and planting the ball in the bottom corner of the net to restore his side’s six-point advantage. Another Connaire Mackin point stretched the lead to seven but two points in as many minutes kept Wolfe Tones well in the game. The Shane’s were then awarded a penalty when David McCabe was fouled in the small square but Paul O’Rourke’s resulting kick hit the inside of both posts before Wolfe cleared the danger. A Connaire Mackin free kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shane’s but two points in a minute for the home side left them just four points in arrears with just over ten minutes left on the clock. A Paul O’Rourke point was cancelled out almost immediately but an inspirational point from Greg McCabe and another pointed Connaire Mackin free saw the Shane’s claim the all-important win, 2 – 11 to 1 – 8.
Saturday’s win sees the Shane’s top their group ahead of next Sunday’s final group game at home to Forkhill at 2.30pm and should they win that game they will automatically qualify for the championship quarter-final.
U16 Girls
The U16 girls have a home game on Monday evening against Killeavy at 6.45pm.
U10s
Our U10s travelled to Silverbridge on Wednesday evening and fielded two smaller sided teams. All the kids played some strong, skilful football and we would like to thank Silverbridge for their hospitality.
Annual Golf Classic
The club held its annual Golf Classic at Cloverhill Golf Club on Saturday and following the counting of all the scores the winners were Mark Shevlin, Clive Whelan and Eddie Hill who won a one night’s stay and play at the Slieve Russell. The club would like to thank all those who took part in the tournament, all the local businesses and individuals who very generously sponsored the tournament and Cloverhill Golf Club for their hospitality on Saturday.
Annual Minor Ladies 7-Aside Tournament
The club is hosting its annual minor ladies 7-aside tournament on Saturday 22nd September. The tournament is be sponsored by BM Steel with Cup and Shield competitions on the day. Entry fee is £40/€50 and further information please contact 07876 453546 or shanesladies16@gmail.com
Trip to All-Ireland Ladies Finals
The club is running a bus to the three All-Ireland Ladies Finals on Sunday 16th September. The bus will leave the club at 10.00am that morning and returning at approx. 7.00pm that evening at a cost of £15 per child and £20 per adult. The price includes the bus journey to and from Croke Park as well as entry to Croke Park for the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Ladies football finals. Well Done
Well done to two of our senior footballers, Terence and Ciaran Feehan, who both recently took part in the Bessbrook Duathlon and raised a magnificent £4,414.76 in aid of Ellen’s Journey – well done lads.
Best Wishes
Best wishes to two of our more senior members, Mick Mackin (Snr) and Sheila Osborne. Mick is currently recuperating in hospital whilst Sheila is recovering at home following a short hospital stay.
Darts Team
The Shane’s darts team began their new season with a friendly game against local rivals Doyle’s on Friday night.
Lotto
Last week’s winning lotto numbers were 3, 6, 7 & 11. There were no jackpot winners and 9 x match three winners. The jackpot now stands at £2,000.
