Our senior men made the short trip to Correnshigo on Friday evening and recorded a well-deserved seven point win, 1 – 11 to 1 – 4.
The Shanes made a slow start to the game and were punished when high ball to edge of the square was punched to the net to give the home side a three point lead. This early set back appeared to waken the Shanes up and three point without reply soon had them back on level terms, with Mark McCabe (0 - 2) and Danny Monaghan on target. The sides then swapped points with Mark McCabe again getting the Shanes score before another McCabe point brought the sides level. The Shanes went ahead for the first time soon after when Danny Monaghan fisted the ball over the bar from a tight angle. The Shanes were dominating proceedings at this stage and a further point apiece from McCabe and Monaghan sent them into the break with a three point advantage, 0 – 8 to 1 – 2.
The second-half was almost ten minutes old before either side registered a score with Correnshigo getting their third point of the contest to leave just two between the sides. However Mark McCabe replied with his sixth point of the game to restore his side’s three point advantage and it was McCabe who all but sealed the Shanes win minutes later when pounced on a Correnshigo mistake to race clear of their defence and confidently dispatch the ball to the net. The Shanes led by six points at this stage and well taken point from centre-half back Nathan Morgan increased this to seven following some good work by second-half substitution James Girvan. A pointed free from Correnshigo got them back to within six but a late Paul O’Rourke score was the last of the game as the Shanes claimed the all-important win, 1 – 11 to 1 – 4.
Senior Ladies
A great home performance from our senior ladies on Wednesday evening saw them qualify for the next round of the championship with a comprehensive win over Killeavy, 7 – 10 to 1 – 7.
The Shanes rushed into an early ten point lead thanks to score from Aimee Mackin, Aoibheann Jones and her younger sister Ciara. The sides then swapped two points each with Aimee Mackin getting both the Shanes scores before the home side tagged on a further goal and two points to increase their advantage. A Killeavy goal and a point kept the scoreboard ticking over for them but thanks to Blaithin Mackin and Aoibheann Jones the Shanes hit two late goals to hold a commanding half-time advantage.
Three early second-half points kept the Shanes firmly in control of the contest, with Killeavy replying with one of their own, their fourth of the game. The Shanes ladies registered a further 1 – 2 but to the credit Killeavy kept the home side scoreless for the remainder of the game whilst tagging on a further three points of their own to leave the final score 7 – 10 to 1 – 7 in favour of the Shanes.
Minor Boys
Our minor boys have a re-arranged fixture on Monday evening, 11th July against Killeavy and all players are asked to be at the club no later than 6.30pm.
U16 Girls
Training for our U16 girls continues on Tuesday evening from 6.30pm – 7.30pm as normal at the field.
Meabh O’Neill’s Camogie
Training for all U14, U12, U10 and U8 takes place at the Shane's pitch every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm. All new members aged from 4 and upwards are welcome to attend. Any past or present camogie or hurling players who could spare one hour per week on Wednesday evening to help coach some of our underage camogs is to contact Sandra on 07599640444 - your help would be greatly appreciated.
The Qube
The club is hosting The Qube as a major fundraising event on Saturday 20th August in the club grounds in conjunction with The Fight On Campaign for Séanín. Anyone wishing to be a competitor on the night and be in with a chance of winning £1500 is asked to contact any committee member and submit their name asap as spaces are filling up quickly. Tickets for the event are also available from any committee member and are priced at £10.00 or €12.00. As this will be a major fundraising venture for the club we are asking all club members to get involved and make it a huge success.
Hard Luck
Hard luck to our ladies footballers Kirsty Murphy, Lisa Devlin, Orlagh McKenna, Orlaith McArdle, Jessica Watters and Sorcha McDonnell who were all part of the Armagh U16 team who were defeated by Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final on Saturday.
