For the second week in a row our senior men suffered a narrow one point defeat on Friday evening away to Tullysarran, 2 – 11 to 0 – 16.
The Shanes went ahead early on with a Mark McCabe point before the home side scored three in a row with Micheál Brady responding for the Shanes. A Tullysarran free put them two ahead before a point a-piece from Mark McCabe and Kristian Magill levelled the game with Mark McCabe pointing soon after to put the Shanes one up. Three points in the trot put Tullysarran two ahead again with Kristian Magill answering with a pointed free but Tullysarran finished the half on a high with a further two points to leave them three to the good at the break, 0 – 9 to 0 – 6.
An early Paul O’Rourke point gave the Shanes a good start to the second-half before the impressive Kristian Magill fired over three points, two from frees, to put his side ahead by one. The Shanes were playing some great football at this stage but they were rocked back on their heels soon after when Tullysarran netted their first goal which they quickly followed up with another point to put them back in front by three. It was at this point that the Shanes hit a real purple patch, knocking over six points without reply, with Paul O’Rourke getting four of them and Kristian Magill scoring the other two to seemingly seal the win. However, to their credit Tullysarran refused to lie down and with less than five left on the clock they registered their second goal to level contest once more. The game was then delayed for a period of time following a nasty looking knee injury sustained by the Shanes captain Dan Fearon but when the game re-started it was Tullysarran who grabbed the all-important winning score and claim the victory by a single point, 2 – 11 to 0 – 16.
There’s an old saying in football that goals win games and this was certainly the case on Friday evening as Tullysarran made the most of their chances whilst the Shanes failed to convert the goal opportunities which came their way.
Everyone at the club extends their best wishes to Dan Fearon following his injury on Friday which we hope doesn’t keep him out of action for too long.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies are at home to Armagh Harps on Monday night, 16th May with a 7.00pm throw-in. All players are asked to be at the club no later than 6.15pm. There is also a possibility of a re-fixture later in the week against Sarsfields but this has to be confirmed.
Minor Boys
Another disappointing performance from our minor boys last Monday night saw them fall to a comprehensive defeat to Crossmaglen. There is a now four week exam break for the lads but they will train on Monday evening at 6.30pm at the club and all available players are asked to be in attendance.
U16 Girls
Last week’s game against Clan Na Gael was unfortunately called off. This was outside of the club’s control and we regret the late notice. Training continues each Tuesday evening from 630pm-730pm in the field.
U14 Boys
The U14 boys are due to travel on Maghery on Tuesday night for their next league game.
U14 Girls
Another terrific performance from our U14 girls saw them claim a fully deserved nine point win over Mullabrack on Saturday evening.
U12½s
Next Saturday, 14th May sees our U12½s scheduled to be at home to Crossmaglen.
U10s
Our U10 footballers are scheduled to play Carrickcruppen this coming Wednesday evening, 18th May.
U8s
Next Saturday afternoon sees our U8 footballers at home to Dromintee.
U6s
Training for our U6s continues every Wednesday evening in Bessbrook Community Centre at 6.00pm.
Meabh O’Neill’s Camogie
Training for all camogie, U14, U12, U10 & U8, takes place at the Shanes pitch every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm. All new members, age 4 and upwards, are welcome to attend.
Any past or present camogie or hurling players who could spare one hour per week on a Wednesday evening to help coach some of our underage camogs is asked to contact Sandra Smith on 07599640444. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
The camogie held a very succesful bucket collection Saturday 23rd April which helped to raise £567.00 and €113.00. The club would like to thank all those who contribute and helped out, it was very much appreciated
Youth Meeting
A youth meeting will take place in the club on Monday, 16th May at 8.30pm in the club for all underage managers and mentors from both boys and girls teams.
Irish Night
In commemoration of Raymond McCreesh’s 35th anniversary, the club is holding an Irish Night next Saturday night, 21st May with the brilliant Village Folk providing the entertainment. The event kicks off at 8.00pm.
Well Done
Well done to Armagh U16 girls who won the Ulster title last week-end, beating Cavan in the final, especially our own girls on the team Jessica Watters, Sorcha McDonnell, Kirsty Murphy and Orlagh McKenna. Well done also to everyone who took part in the CPR/Defib training in the clubhouse last Wednesday night. Our thanks to Andrea Hamilton who facilitated the course.

Last week’s winning lotto numbers were 4, 24, 26 & 27. There were no jackpot winners and 1 x match three winner. The jackpot now stands at £3150.
