A narrow two point home win over Eire Og on Thursday night, 1 – 10 to 1 – 8, saw our senior men maintain their 100% start to league.
With barely twenty seconds gone Mark McCabe opened the scoring for the Shanes with a well taken point which was quickly cancelled out by an Eire Og free. A second point from the away side edged them ahead before Kristian Magill levelled for the Shanes with a pointed free and Paddy Doran put the Shanes back in front with a long range effort. Two points in row from Eire Og saw them lead again but a Paul O’Rourke point late in the half saw the sides go into the half-time interval level pegging on four points each.
The Shanes made the better start to the second period, scoring three points on the trot with Mark McCabe (0 - 2) and Connaire Mackin (0 – 1) on target. The sides then swapped points, with Mark McCabe once again on target for the Camlough side before Eire Og hit the next two points to leave just one between the teams. A brilliant David McCabe point increased the Shanes advantage to two but Eire replied soon after with their eighth point of the contest to leave just the minimum in it once more. A long ball from Connaire Mackin found Mark McCabe in space in front of the Eire Og goal but he was upended in large square leaving the referee no option but to point to the spot and Connaire Mackin stepped up to confidently dispatch the ball to the Eire Og net. The Shanes now led by four and another Mark McCabe point soon after increased the lead to five but Eire Og got a goal of their own with time almost up. This led to a nervy final few minutes but the Shanes held on to claim a hard earned win.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies got the new season off to a winning start on Saturday night with a comfortable victory over Mullaghbawn.
The Shanes established a lead very early on and looked very sharp and incisive throughout the first half hitting the net 5 times, including two from Nicola McFadden and a stunning strike direct from a 45 by Aimee Mackin.
The Shanes remained on top during the second half to run out clear winners.
Next up will be a much tougher challenge on Saturday, when we make the short trip to neighbours Carrickcruppen. Training for this week still to be confirmed.
Minor Boys
Our minor boys were in league action at home to Mullaghbawn last Monday evening but unfortunately for the Shanes they came up against a very good Mullaghbawn side who claimed a well-deserved win. Training for the lads will take place on Monday night at 6.00pm at the club.
Minor Girls
Our minor girls have a home game against Clann Eireann on Monday night, 2nd May at 7.00pm.
U16 Girls
Training for the U16 girls continues on Tuesday evening at 6.30pm. A full attendance is needed as the girls prepare for their next game at home v Clan Na Gael on Monday 9th May at 7.00pm.
U14 Girls
Our U14 girls were in action on Sunday afternoon against Granemore but despite putting in a decent performance they were beaten by the better team on the day.
U12½ Boys
Training continues every Friday evening at 6.00pm at the field.
U12 Girls
Training for the U12 girls continues every Saturday morning at 11.00am in St Pauls small field.
U10s & U8s
Training continues every Friday evening at 6.00pm at the field.
U6s
Training for our U6s continues every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm in Bessbrook Community Centre.
Camogie
Training for all camogie, U14, U12, U10 & U8, takes place at the Shanes pitch every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm. All new members, age 4 and upwards, are welcome to attend.
Any past or present camogie or hurling players who could spare one hour per week on a Wednesday evening to help coach some of our underage camogs is asked to contact Sandra Smith on 07599640444. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
New Jersey Launch
This coming Friday evening will see the launch of our new jersey after our senior men’s home game against An Port Mor. There will be a one off chance to order the new club jersey at a reduced price:

The above prices include number and player fit which are usually £5.00 on the O’Neill’s website.

Well Done
Well done to local lady Irene O’Neill who won the Beyonce tickets at the 70s & 80s night in the club on Saturday night. We hope you enjoy the concert Irene…..maith thú.
Lotto
Last week’s winning lotto numbers were 8, 28, 29 & 30. There were no jackpot winners and 1 x lucky dip winner. The jackpot now stands at £3050.
Condolences
Everyone at the club would like to offer their sympathy to the family of Margaret “Cissie” Jennings who passed away at the week-end. Mrs Jennings was the mother of our former senior footballers Tony and Marty Jennings, grandmother to our current players Caolan and Niall O’Reilly and mother-in-law of our club and Cairde member Gearoid O’Reilly. May she rest in peace.
