A late Michael McParland goal was the difference between our senior men and St Peters in their championship qualifier on Saturday afternoon in Abbey Park; the Shanes winning on a score-line of 2 – 11 to 1 – 11.
The sides swapped three points each in the opening twenty minutes of the game with David McCabe (0 – 1) and the returning Connaire Mackin (0 – 2) on target for the Shanes. With the game tied at three points apiece the Shanes received a massive boost when Aaron Findon kicked out at Shanes half-back David Boyle and the referee had no hesitation in the sending the big midfielder to line and reducing his side to fourteen men. The Shanes made the most of their one man advantage throughout the remainder of the first-half, scoring four points without reply with Sean McLoughlin, David McCabe, Paul O’Rourke and Damian Doyle getting the scores. St Peters registered the last point of the half to trail by three at the break.
The Shanes made the best possible start to the second-half when they intercepted a short kick-out and Connaire Mackin powered forward to confidently stroke the ball to the St Peters net and put his side six points to the good. The Shanes had a chance to further increase their advantage minutes later only for the St Peters to block Sean McLoughlin’s goal bound effort. The Lurgan side reduced the deficit to five soon after with their fifth point of the game and they were back to within two minutes when a high ball caused confusion in the Shanes defence and the full forward made no mistake from close range. Paul O’Rourke edged the Shanes three ahead again but St Peters replied almost immediately to keep the game in the melting pot. The sides then swapped points again with second-half substitute Conal O’Brien on target for the Camlough side before points from David McCabe and Paul O’Rourke gave the Shanes a four point advantage with ten minutes left on the clock. However to their credit St Peters dug in and they scored the next four points in a row to bring the game level and at that stage they looked likely to go on and win the game. With time almost up the Shanes broke forward and long ball to edge of the square saw Michael McParland rise highest to fist the ball to the net and claim the win for his team, 2 - 11 to 1 – 11.
Minor Boys
Our minor boys are through to the Division 1 shield final following a one point win over Cullyhanna last Monday night, 1 – 10 to 2 – 6.
Cullyhanna got the opening two points of the game with Matthew Girvan and Ciaran Mackin replying for the Shanes with pointed frees. The sides then swapped points with Damian O’Hagan pointing for the Shanes direct from a ’45 before Cullyhanna edged three ahead with the first goal of the contest. Points from Oisin O’Callaghan and Matthew Girvan had the Shanes back within one but two Cullyhanna points saw them lead by three at the break.
The Shanes made a great start to the second-half with Eamon McCabe registering a quick fire goal and point to put his side in front for the first time in the game. Further points from Tommy Rickard (0 – 1) and Matthew Girvan (0 – 2) gave the Shanes a four point advantage. A Cullyhanna point was quickly cancelled out by another point from the boot of Tommy Rickard and with the game now in the closing minutes the Shanes led by four. Cullyhanna then registered their second goal to leave just one between them but the Shanes defence, who were excellent throughout, held firm to see their side over the line on a score-line of 1 – 10 to 2 – 6.
The lads take on Dromintee in the shield final on Monday night, 5th September at 7.00pm in Silverbridge and all players are asked to meet at the club at 5.45pm.
U16 Girls
Our U16 girls lost out to Clann Eireann in the U16 A championship final last Wednesday last in Mullabrack. On the night Clann Eireann were a stronger team and deserving winners but the Shanes girls however can be very proud of their achievements getting to the final and putting up a spirited performance. The girls are still well in contention in the U16 Division 1 League with next game on Monday night, 5th September away to Carrickcruppen at 7.00pm. All players are asked to meet in Carrickcruppen at 6.30pm.
U10s & U8s
Training for our U10 and U8 footballers continues on Tuesday and Friday evenings at the club from 6.00pm – 7.00pm.
U6s
Following the summer break U6 training resumes this coming Wednesday evening, 7th September at 6.00pm in Bessbrook Community Centre. All new players, boys and girls, are welcome to attend.
Meabh O’Neill’s Camogie
Well done to the U12 camogs who won the league on Saturday with a brilliant victory over Tullysaran in a rain-drenched Granemore. The young camogs have been excellent throughout the season and their victory on Saturday was fully deserved after all their hard work and commitment during the year. Congratulations to all the players and their managers.
Training for U8, U10 and U12 camogs continues every Wednesday evening from 6.00pm – 7.00pm at the field. Any past or present camogs, hurlers who would like to volunteer one hour to train our camogs on Wednesday evenings please contact Sandra 07599640444 – you help would be greatly appreciated.
The camogie club is organising a bucket collection and bag pack over the coming few weeks and anyone available to help out is asked to contact any committee member.
Youth Meeting
All current, past or potential underage managers/mentors/coaches /helpers are asked to attend a meeting on Monday 12th September at 8.00pm in the clubhouse to make arrangements for both girls and boys underage for next season. Parents of players are also asked to attend for feedback on last season.
Annual Golf Classic
This year’s Shane O’Neill’s Annual Golf Classic will take place on Saturday 17th September in Cloverhill Golf Club. The tournament will take the format of a 3 Ball Scramble with an entry of £75.00 per 3 ball team. The winners will receive a 1 night’s Stay and Play at Slieve Russel Hotel. Club Merchandise
Orders for half-zips, skinny bottoms and body-warmers can be made at the club at 9.00pm every Monday night in September (5th, 12th, 19th & 26th).
Free Computer Classes
Camlough IT Centre (Community House) and Southern Regional College are offering FREE Level 1 and Level 2 Computer Classes. An enrolment evening will take place in Community House from 7.00pm – 8.00pm on Tuesday 13th September. If you would like more information please telephone Margaret 07801651920.
