Write a commentThe Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Councillor Daire Hughes launched the Willie Maley Soccer Tournament yesterday.
Speaking at the Launch Mayor Daire Hughes said "It gives me great pleasure to formally launch the Willie Maley Soccer Tournament and I wish all the teams every success in what we hope will be a week long festival of soccer. I would wish to commend you Chairman and your Club for entering into this collaboration with Newry & Mourne District Council and the host venue Nan Rices.
"Those of you here tonight who were involved in the original event many years ago will recall the success of the tournament that hosted many clubs from outside of the District including Ardoyne Shamrocks, Newington FC, West Belfast Select, Malachians and clubs from the south. Many of these clubs will also be here tonight and will have fond memories of the very successful event which ran for many years with Barcroft FC and the Council as host organisations."
"This new event we hope will have the same success and I would like to cordially welcome al the soccer clubs who are here tonight and in particular the teams from outside of the District. It is also the hope of Newry Celtic FC and the Council that this event will be the catalyst for raising the profile and story of the most famous son of Glasgow Celtic FC - Willie Maley - and his links with Newry and the area of Mournview and Linenhall in particular."
