St John Bosco U16s

St John Bosco vs An Riocht Jack Mackin Park Thursday 19th June 2014
Bosco under 16s began the second half of their season with a home game with An Riocht on Thursday last.
Bosco won the toss and elected to play with the breeze in the first half. Although dominating possession, with Aidan Mc Namara and Paul Hadden prominent in launching attacks from midfield, and Stephen O' Connor showing well at half-forward, Bosco weren't making it count on the scoreboard. Points from Devin Quigley and Stephen O' Connor finally got the show on the road. An Riocht kept in touch though with a few frees. Things improved though when Stevie O' Connor bagged Bosco's first goal after good approach play from Ruairi Lavery and Ryan Mc Aleavey. Further points from D. Quigley and Mc Aleavey consolidated the lead. Bosco lost their way then and some silly frees allowed An Riocht to claw back the lead. Half time had level scores at Bosco 1-04 to 0-07.
After some stern words at half time Bosco came out well fired up and opened a 5 point gap with a goal from the excellent Caomhan Boyle and points from Rory Mc Parland and P. Hadden. This start rocked An Riocht but to their credit they never quit. With Devin Quigley dominating in the forward line and the tigerish defending of Lucas Rossiter and Ciaran Byrne in the full back line they could get a hold of the game though. Another goal and point from James Harken extended the lead. An Riocht went all out for goals to get back into the game but could find no way past a rock solid Bosco defence. Final score Bosco 3-09 An Riocht 0-11
St John Bosco Gaelic for Mothers
In preparation for their next 2 blitzes our Gaelic4Mothers&Others have been training hard throughout the latter part of May and all of June to ensure that they are as fit, strong and ready for both blitzes.
On Saturday 28th June the ladies travel to the Mid Ulster Sports Arena in Cookstown to take part in an invitational 9 aside blitz and the following Saturday the 4th of July the team head to Randalstown in County Antrim to play in the Ulster Blitz. This will be a momentous day for the club and indeed the ladies as it will be the 1st time the Bosco have been represented in a G4M&O blitz at provincial level.
Coach Mo Rooney has stated that whilst the ethos for G4M&O is fun and non competitive the ladies have been working non stop to ensure the skills they have learned and developed since early January will be on show come the 5th of July.
The ladies will also be attending the Leinster Blitz in late August and of course the big one , The National Blitz in October in Portmarnock and yes the rumours are true the ladies have 10 rooms in the neighbouring Portmarnock Golf and Spa Hotel booked.
We wish the mothers and others all the best in the coming weeks and look forward to seeing them play at home in the very near future.

St John Bosco U12s vs Attical Jack Mackin Park Sunday 22nd June
Sunday morning in bright sunshine, Jack Mackin Park in great condition, a squad of the best players a club could wish for warming up and all looking forward to a competitive U12 match with a throw in time of 11:00 a.m. - it doesn’t get much better than that.
Despite missing 8 key players through holidays, injury and a myriad of entertaining excuses that only children could present, the Bosco mentors faced a squad of 16 children that only wanted to play football, have fun and try their best to win.
The biggest problem that Bosco mentors, Paedar, Hugh, Kevin and Paul (other mentor Davey MacAnulty missing in action away on holiday, which we don’t mind apart from the fact that he brought his son Cal our midfielder away with him!) have is how do we ensure that all the players get game time especially with the U12 games supposed to be 11 a side. Once we talked to Mickey the other Attical mentors and the referee this problem was soon rectified. Attical had arrived with 15 players so it was agreed that we would go with 15 a side. After a quick pitch adjustment to make room for the additional personnel the referee threw the ball in at 11:15 a.m.
The first 5 minutes of football illustrated that both teams were very evenly matched and despite some excellent passages of play neither team was able to register any scores. However it was Attical that settled first and soon had the first score of the game with a fine score from close in despite the attention of the Bosco defence. Kealan McStay in the Bosco nets for the first time was called into action after this and responded excellently saving two shots at goal. Pól Óg McCormack soon had Bosco on level terms with a long range point from out on the left wing. Matthew Monroe operating at half back was having a great game and surged forward to register two points for the Bosco team before Attical drew level with two points of their own. James Boyle and Jack O’Hare added two more points for the Bosco team to leave the gap of 2 between the teams at half time.
Half time Bosco 0:05 Attical 0:03
The second half started in blistering fashion with a long ball into the Attical back line from Pól Óg which Padraig Caldwell latched onto and coolly finished it into the net. Matthew Monroe continued the second half where he left off in the first with more great play from the half back line and added two more points to his tally to leave Bosco ahead by 7 points with a couple of minutes to go. Despite some great pressure from Attical the Bosco defence held firm with Nathan Gribben, Conall Shields, Caolón Gormley, new man Sean Torley and David McCreesh holding firm and restricting the Attical players to shooting from outside the 45. The Attical pressure was rewarded in the last minute of the game when a shot from distance beat young McStay and dropped into the back of the net. Rising to the challenge the Bosco lads responded immediately and from the resultant kick out charged down the pitch and Ruaraí O’Hare got the last score of the game with a fine point.
Full time Bosco 1:08 Attical 1:03

St John Bosco U10s Clonduff Tournament Sat June 21st
The U10 were involved in a tournament on Sat 21st June in Drumgath. In their opening game they defeated a much fancied Clonduff team by 2-4 to 2-0 helped in large part by a blistering goal scored by Aaron Downey at the start of the second half and by a string of fine saves from Josh Hanna. In the second game a buoyant Bosco team were surprisingly beaten by Drumgath. Fine performances were given by Cormac White and Ciaran McAlinden. In our third game a now tiring team were beaten by a very fit Burren A team. (Fellas - we'll have to work on our fitness!). And so into the final of the Shield where a great team performance produced a draw of 1-3 apiece against Burren B. The photo shows Joe Hanna skilfully fisting to the net after a wonderful sweeping move up the field from Joshua Madigan and Cormac Flanagan. Extra time proved our gallant battlers downfall but all the players can hold their heads high and be very proud of their achievement and battling performances.
The other players were Jack McElherron, Dessy McAleavy, Ryan Larkin, Matthew and Callum Kane, Jonny O'Hanlon, Marco Cafolla, Sal Merindino, Shay Malone, Shay Sullivan, Callum Quinn and Gerard McEvoy.
A big thank you to Dumgath GAA for a superbly organised day and for their exceptional hospitality.
