Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a resurfacing scheme on the A2 Warrenpoint Road Dual Carriageway in Newry, with works getting under way tomorrow Friday 8 May 2026. The works are expected to cost £750,000
The scheme will see 2.1 kilometres of the Newry-bound carriageway resurfaced, stretching from near the Old Warrenpoint Road junction to the Greenbank Road Roundabout in Newry, with completion expected by Monday 25 May 2026.
Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. This investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities."
She added: "This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Newry area."
To allow the works to be carried out safely, a series of weekend closures will be in place on the Newry-bound A2 Warrenpoint Road Dual Carriageway between Narrow Water Roundabout, Warrenpoint and Greenbank Road Roundabout. The road will be closed continuously from 7pm Friday 8 May to 6am Monday 11 May, from 7pm Friday 15 May to 6am Monday 18 May, and from 7pm Friday 22 May to 6am Monday 25 May 2026.
During closures, a diversionary route will be signposted via A2 Warrenpoint Road, A2 Newry Road, A2 Newry St, A2 Church St, B7 Duke St, B7 Upper Dromore Road, B7 Milltown St, B7 Bridge Road, B7 Chapel Hill, B8 Newry Road, B8 Hilltown Road, A25 Rathriland Road, A25 Windsor Hill, A25 Sandys St, A1 Downshire Road, A1 Trevor Hill, A1 Upper Water St, A1 Abbey Way, A1 William St, A2 Kilmorey St and vice versa.
A temporary speed limit of 50mph will be in place along the A2 Warrenpoint Road for the duration of the works, with overtaking also prohibited throughout.
Minister Kimmins added: "I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
Completion by Monday 25 May 2026 remains subject to favourable weather conditions.
