This week is Organ Donation Week and to mark the week a number of buildings across the Southern Trust area will be lit up pink. A specially commissioned artwork in honour of all of those who have donated organs will also be installed at Daisy Hill Hospital.
Launching the campaign in the Southern area, Organ Donation Committee Chair Siobhan Rooney said: “Despite the great advances in organ donation and transplantation, there are still many people waiting for a life-changing transplant across Northern Ireland.

There are currently around 137 people waiting on a transplant in Northern Ireland. Organ Donation Week aims to encourage more people to join the NHS register.
Throughout the week, Newry Town Hall will be lit up along with Craigavon Area, and South Tyrone hospitals as well as Ranfurly House and the Burnavon Centre in Mid Ulster, the Palace Stables and Armagh Jail, Banbridge Town Hall and Craigavon Civic Centre.
“We are absolutely delighted that our partners in local councils are joining with us this year to ‘shine a light’ on the importance of becoming an organ donor.
“Donating an organ is one of the most generous things you can do for another person so we hope that this campaign encourages more people to join the register and to tell their loved ones of their wishes.”
Edel Livingstone Specialist Nurse for Organ Donation for the Southern Trust adds: “Throughout the week, we will also have a number of information stands on display in our hospitals for patients, staff and visitors to find out more about becoming a donor.
“We always ask people if you needed a transplant would you have one – and if yes please think about signing up to help those who really are in need now of donated organs or tissue.”
