Ashgrove Avenue road safety call

Karen McKevitt MLA and Cllr Gary Stokes are calling on Transport NI (formerly Roads Service) to put pupil safety first by introducing a safe crossing on the busy road outside Saint Ronan’s Primary School, Sacred Heart School and Ashgrove Nursery. Both representatives have heard the concerns of local parents and Cllr Stokes has asked for a Pedestrian or Zebra crossing to be considered.

Cllr Stokes said “Parents of pupils who attend these schools are concerned for the safety of their children when crossing the road on Ashgrove Avenue on their way to and from school.  Parents, residents and those who use the road will know that this is a very busy area regularly used by cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians.  We have written to Transport NI to highlight the need for a safe crossing to be introduced and suggested a pedestrian or zebra crossing be considered.  Road safety should be an absolute priority and action needs to be taken to ensure children safety.”

Karen added “Transport NI must take action to ensure that all children and parents have safe and priority passage across this busy road.  My children attend these schools and I am all too familiar with the traffic levels during peak times.  I hope to hear back from Transport NI soon but in the meantime I am meeting with the Minister for Regional Development tomorrow (Tuesday) and I will raise this issue with her directly.”
