Write a commentNewry man John Fearon has returned to Newry following a demanding trek in the Himalayas in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Before the trek even started flights to Heathrow then to Delhi then to Kathmandu followed by a six hour drive to Pokhara where the trek to Poon Hill began.
Speaking about the trek John said "For the first three days, we trekked away from the main paths on the Annapurna trail and this consisted off steep pathways through forested areas and passing through small Nepalese villages and schools. The Trek took us along the banks of the Modi Khola river and after two days we had views into the Kali Gandaki Valley and the high mountains above. There were views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range and Fang Annapurna South and Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain) .
"On Day 6 we ascended to Poon Hill at over 3200m and had fantastic views of the Himalayas. The trail was now a steep descent through ice and snow to the Deurali Pass and through the villages of Tadapani and Ghandruk, the latter being the traditional centre for recruitment if British Gurkhas. After trekking through Syaule Bazaar and Birethanti the trek ended at Naya Pul after crossing a rope bridge festooned with prayer flags. Our group then had a celebration dinner back in Kathmandu that evening."
