Sixty percent of all noise complaints received in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area during 2014/15 were in relation to ‘dog barking.’

On 23 May, Noise Action Week commences with the aim of promoting practical solutions to everyday noise problems.

Dogs bark for many reasons.
Dogs bark for many reasons.

During Noise Action Week, the Council’s Environmental Health Officers and Dog Wardens will accompany Officers from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive during visits to housing developments throughout the district where the Council has received a high number of dog barking complaints in recent years. The aim of these visits is to give dog owners advice on dog care and reducing noise pollution from excessive barking.

There are many reasons why dogs may bark; they may be lonely, bored, need attention, be defending their territory or can be suffering from medical problems. Every complaint received by the Council is treated seriously and steps are taken to help solve all noise complaints.

Noise can cause disruption and distress to everyone. For Noise Action Week all current and prospective dog owners are urged to consider the noise from barking and the effect it has on others, consider your responsibilities to your dog such as licensing, healthcare, grooming, walking and to learn behavioural techniques to help reduce barking.

For further information in relation to the Noise Control service provided by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council please contact the Health and Wellbeing Department on 0300 013 2233 or email ehealth@nmandd.org
